Description
The 2021 Château l'Eglise-Clinet Pomerol Magnum is a poised and classically styled Right Bank Bordeaux from one of Pomerol’s most revered estates. Presented in magnum format, it offers an exceptional opportunity for long-term cellaring and memorable tableside service. This vintage highlights the château’s hallmark depth and precision, but in a fresher, more finely etched expression that reflects the cooler 2021 growing season.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château l'Eglise-Clinet shows a deep ruby-purple core with bright, youthful reflections—concentrated yet not opaque, hinting at both intensity and finesse. The nose opens with pure black cherry and ripe plum, followed by layers of cassis, violets, graphite, and a subtle leafy, floral lift from the Cabernet Franc. Notes of dark chocolate, fine cedar, fresh tobacco, and a hint of pencil shavings emerge with air, framed by well-integrated, lightly toasty oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a striking balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. Black and red fruits—blackberry, plum skin, and wild raspberry—are wrapped in silky yet finely grained tannins, giving the wine both elegance and structure. There’s a mineral line and savory complexity (truffle, cocoa nib, and a touch of spice) that linger on a long, precise finish. The 2021 vintage is more about refinement than sheer power, and in magnum it has excellent aging potential: it should begin to drink well from around 2026–2027 and evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more.
Production
Château l'Eglise-Clinet sits on some of Pomerol’s most prized terroir, a patchwork of deep gravels, clay, and iron-rich subsoils that naturally favor Merlot, supported by old-vine Cabernet Franc. Yields are kept low, and the fruit is harvested by hand in small batches, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the grand vin. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing each plot’s character to be expressed before blending. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, for refinement and complexity, while the estate’s philosophy emphasizes purity of fruit, clarity of terroir, and meticulous attention to detail at every stage.
Food & Serving
This Pomerol is a superb match for richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal chops, duck breast, or game birds with mushroom jus. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, porcini-laced pasta, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, especially in magnum, decanting for 1.5–2 hours will help the aromas unfurl and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes is often sufficient to let it show its full complexity.
