Description
2021 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey Grand Vin Sec Bordeaux Blanc is the refined dry counterpart to one of Sauternes’ most illustrious sweet wines. Crafted from old vines selected specifically for dry winemaking, it delivers the depth and complexity you’d expect from a Premier Cru Classé estate, but in a focused, vibrant white. Styled in the vein of the finest Pessac-Léognan blancs, this wine marries crystalline freshness with luxurious texture and a touch of opulence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Grand Vin Sec Bordeaux Blanc shows a pale straw to light gold hue with brilliant highlights, reflecting both youth and purity. The nose opens with lifted aromatics of citrus blossom, ripe grapefruit and lime zest, layered over exotic notes of pineapple, passion fruit and white peach. Subtle vanilla, toasted hazelnut and a hint of fresh brioche testify to judicious oak aging, while a thread of wet stone and chalk adds elegance.
On the palate, the wine is precise yet generous: Sauvignon Blanc leads with tension, bright acidity and zesty citrus, while Semillon brings creamier texture, depth and a slightly waxy, mouth-coating feel. Flavors of exotic fruit, orchard fruits and a touch of lemongrass are wrapped in fine, well-integrated oak, giving gentle spice and a faint smokiness. The finish is long, saline and refreshing, with a persistent, ‘always on’ freshness that keeps the richness in perfect check. Enjoyable now for its energy and aromatic intensity, it also has the structure and balance to develop greater nuance over the next 5–8 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from parcels in Sauternes that are not used for the estate’s legendary sweet wine, the Grand Vin Sec comes from old vines particularly suited to dry vinification. The gravelly, clay-limestone soils typical of the region, combined with the influence of nearby rivers, help produce grapes with both aromatic concentration and vibrant acidity. The blend is 51% Sauvignon Blanc and 49% Semillon, harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness while achieving full flavor development. After careful sorting, the juice is fermented as a dry white, with controlled temperatures to retain aromatics. Aging takes place partly in oak barrels, bringing creamy texture and subtle toast without overwhelming the fruit, resulting in a Bordeaux Blanc styled to rival the best of Pessac-Léognan. The bottle is further distinguished by an elegant engraving created in collaboration with the famed crystal house René Lalique.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white that shines at the table. Pair it with refined seafood dishes such as halibut or turbot in beurre blanc, seared scallops, lobster, or crab, as well as roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, or truffled poultry. It also complements sushi, richer shellfish pastas, and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine open up and reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one of Sauternes’ historic estates, classified Premier Cru Classé in the legendary 1855 classification and long recognized for producing some of the appellation’s most profound sweet wines. Located on some of the finest terroirs of the region, the château has built a reputation for meticulous viticulture, precision in the cellar and a distinctive style that balances richness with freshness. In recent years, the estate has expanded its vision beyond sweet wines, reviving and refining its production of dry whites to showcase the full potential of its old vines and exceptional soils. The creation of the Grand Vin Sec Bordeaux Blanc, combined with artistic collaborations such as the René Lalique bottle engraving, underlines Lafaurie-Peyraguey’s status as a benchmark property that bridges heritage, craftsmanship and modern luxury in Bordeaux.
