Description
2021 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after dry whites, combining crystalline freshness with serious depth and age‑worthy structure. Produced in tiny quantities from old vines in Pessac-Léognan, it delivers grand-cru complexity in a refined, mineral-driven style. This is a benchmark white Bordeaux that captures the cool, pure character of the 2021 vintage while remaining unmistakably La Mission.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc shows a pale straw to light gold hue, with bright, silvery reflections that hint at its youthful energy. The nose is intense yet precise: layers of citrus (grapefruit, lemon zest), white peach and crisp pear are intertwined with floral notes of jasmine and acacia, plus subtle aromas of wet stone, flint, beeswax and a refined whisper of toasted oak and vanilla.
On the palate, the wine is both vibrant and concentrated, with a spine of racy acidity that frames its generous, silky texture. Expect a beautifully balanced interplay of ripe orchard and stone fruits, tangy citrus, and savoury mineral tones, supported by delicate oak spice and a touch of creamy, lees‑derived richness. The finish is long, linear and saline, with lingering notes of grapefruit pith, chalk and subtle herbs. While already impressive in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and intensity to evolve gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining complexity, honeyed nuances and deeper nutty tones with bottle age.
Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc comes from meticulously tended parcels in Pessac-Léognan, just outside Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over clay and sand provide superb drainage and naturally low yields—ideal for concentrated, aromatic white wines. The blend is typically dominated by Sémillon with a significant proportion of Sauvignon Blanc (and occasionally a touch of Sauvignon Gris), combining richness and texture with lift and tension. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with careful sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the press. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a proportion of them new, followed by aging on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, adding volume, creaminess and complexity while preserving the wine’s vibrant acidity and detailed aromatics.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines alongside refined dishes: think lobster with beurre blanc, turbot or sole in a delicate cream sauce, scallops, roasted poultry with morels, veal blanquette, or rich fish terrines. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Brie de Meaux or mild goat cheeses, and with truffle‑accented cuisine where its structure and minerality can cut through richness. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth can help open up the nose and soften the oak, while older bottles should be handled more delicately with minimal aeration.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the great estates of Pessac-Léognan and a close neighbour (and stablemate) of the iconic Château Haut-Brion. With roots stretching back to the 16th and 17th centuries, La Mission has built a reputation for producing some of Bordeaux’s most characterful and age-worthy wines, both red and white. Under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the estate has benefitted from meticulous vineyard work and state-of-the-art winemaking, elevating its dry white to cult status among collectors and sommeliers. Today, La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc stands as a reference point for barrel‑fermented, terroir‑driven white Bordeaux, consistently earning top scores and representing one of the region’s most limited and prestigious white wine bottlings.
