Description

The 2021 Château La Gaffelière Saint-Émilion Grand Cru in magnum format offers a beautifully classical interpretation of Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the appellation’s most storied estates. Elegant, poised and finely structured, this wine captures the freshness and precision of the 2021 vintage while remaining true to La Gaffelière’s signature supple texture and aromatic lift. Bottled in magnum, it’s an ideal choice for collectors and for those planning ahead for special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château La Gaffelière shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with a bright, youthful rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is refined and expressive, offering layered aromas of black cherry, red plum and wild berries intertwined with notes of violet, graphite, crushed stone and subtle cedar from well-judged oak. Hints of tobacco leaf, licorice and a gentle floral perfume add complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied with a sleek, silky texture, driven by the estate’s hallmark Merlot–Cabernet Franc blend. Juicy red and black fruits are supported by fine, chalky tannins and a lively line of freshness, giving the wine energy and length rather than sheer weight. Flavors of ripe cherry, dark raspberry and blackcurrant are layered with spice, cocoa and a distinct mineral edge from the limestone soils. The finish is long, pure and elegantly tapered. In magnum, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: it will drink well from around 2026 but should continue to evolve gracefully for 15–20+ years under proper cellaring.

Production
Château La Gaffelière sits on the famed Côte de Saint-Émilion, where limestone and clay-limestone soils provide exceptional drainage and a distinctive mineral signature. The vineyard, dominated by Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, is farmed with great attention to detail, with parcels harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, grapes are sorted meticulously and vinified parcel by parcel to respect the nuances of each terroir. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion new), allowing the wine to gain texture, aromatic complexity and structure while preserving the clarity and freshness that define the 2021 vintage.

Food & Serving
This 2021 Château La Gaffelière magnum is a refined partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine tannins. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the wine to unfurl; as it matures, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château La Gaffelière is one of the historic great names of Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and with roots on the plateau and slopes just south of the medieval village. The estate’s history stretches back centuries, with a long-standing reputation for producing wines that combine depth and elegance, reflecting the limestone-rich terroirs that have made Saint-Émilion world-famous. Under modern stewardship, La Gaffelière has invested heavily in vineyard management and precision winemaking, earning critical acclaim and reaffirming its status as one of the leading properties of the Right Bank. Its wines are celebrated for their age-worthiness, balance and ability to express the subtleties of each vintage with remarkable finesse.
