Description
The 2021 Château Gazin Pomerol is a refined, classically styled Right Bank Bordeaux that highlights freshness, precision, and terroir over sheer power. Sourced from one of Pomerol’s most respected estates, it offers a beautifully poised expression of Merlot-driven elegance from a cooler, more traditional vintage. This is a wine for those who appreciate finesse, aromatic complexity, and the long-lived charm of great claret.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château Gazin shows a deep ruby color with a vibrant, almost garnet edge, signaling both youth and restraint. The nose is pure and finely etched, with layers of red and black plum, wild raspberry, and black cherry, interwoven with notes of violets, graphite, cedar shavings, and a subtle hint of truffle and cocoa from sensitive oak aging. A touch of dried herbs and pencil lead adds a distinctly Bordelais, mineral-tinged complexity.
On the palate, the wine is medium to medium-plus bodied, precise, and beautifully balanced, with supple tannins and a lively backbone of acidity that reflects the cooler 2021 growing season. Juicy red and black fruits are framed by nuances of mocha, tobacco leaf, and savory spice, giving a long, focused, and gently tapering finish. This vintage emphasizes finesse and drinkability rather than sheer concentration, making it approachable in its youth while still structured enough to evolve gracefully. Enjoyable now with decanting, it should cellar well for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of forest floor, leather, and truffle.
Production
Château Gazin is situated on Pomerol’s famed plateau, on gravelly and clay-rich soils that sit over an iron-rich subsoil—classic terroir for Merlot of depth and character. While the precise blend can vary by vintage, Gazin is traditionally dominated by Merlot, complemented by smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which lend structure, lift, and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in a challenging, cooler year like 2021. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a portion new), where it gains polish, spice, and textural refinement without overwhelming the clarity of the fruit or the imprint of the terroir.
Food & Serving
The 2021 Château Gazin is a natural partner for classic French cuisine and refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, veal chops, and game birds, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, truffles, or lentils. Hard and semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, and aged cheddar also work well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, while more mature bottles can be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment.
