Description
The 2021 Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé in magnum format offers a beautifully classical expression of Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. Known for its unusually high proportion of Cabernet on Right Bank gravel, Figeac delivers a wine that is at once refined, structured, and built for graceful evolution. This 2021 is a poised, fresh, and finely detailed vintage that will reward collectors who appreciate finesse over sheer power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château Figeac shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both youth and elegance. The nose is fragrant and finely etched, offering notes of blackcurrant, wild raspberry, red plum, and fresh cherry layered with graphite, cedar, violet, and subtle tobacco leaf. Hints of crushed stone, fine spice, and a delicate herbal lift underscore the wine’s precision and cool-vintage character.
On the palate, this is a medium to medium-plus bodied Figeac with a taut, linear profile and beautifully polished tannins. Juicy red and black fruits are framed by bright acidity, giving the wine a sense of energy and clarity rather than opulence. Flavors of cassis, redcurrant, and ripe cherry sit atop nuances of pencil lead, cigar box, cocoa nib, and a faint saline-mineral edge. The finish is long, pure, and aromatic, carried by fine-grained tannins and a persistent, mouthwatering freshness. In magnum, the 2021 has excellent aging potential: expect a prime drinking window from around 2030 onwards, with the capacity to evolve for two to three decades under proper cellaring.
Production
Château Figeac’s vineyards are planted on three distinctive Günzian gravel outcrops in western Saint-Émilion, over clay and sand subsoils—an unusually Médoc-like terroir on the Right Bank, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside Merlot. The estate is farmed with meticulous parcel selection and hand-harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness, especially important in a cooler, more classical vintage such as 2021. After strict sorting, the grapes—typically a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a significant share of Merlot—are vinified by plot in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The grand vin then ages in French oak barriques, a high proportion of which are new, allowing the wine’s structure and aromatic complexity to develop without overwhelming its finesse and freshness.
Food & Serving
The 2021 Château Figeac Magnum is a superb match for refined dishes where subtlety and texture are key: roast lamb with herbs, veal tenderloin, beef fillet with truffle jus, duck breast, or game birds such as pheasant or pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, black truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic lift and tension. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the tannins soften and the bouquet open; as the wine matures, a shorter decant primarily for aeration and sediment management will suffice.
Producer
Château Figeac is one of the most historic and distinguished estates in Saint-Émilion, with roots stretching back to Roman times and a continuous winemaking tradition spanning centuries. Uniquely positioned on gravel soils bordering Pomerol, Figeac has long stood apart in the Right Bank due to its Cabernet-driven style, earning a reputation for wines that combine Left Bank structure with Right Bank charm. Recognized as Premier Grand Cru Classé and, in the most recent Saint-Émilion classification, elevated to the highest echelon of the appellation, the estate is considered one of Bordeaux’s benchmark properties. Under visionary, quality-obsessed ownership and careful, detail-driven viticulture and winemaking, Château Figeac has become synonymous with elegance, age-worthiness, and a singular expression of Saint-Émilion terroir.
