Description

The 2021 Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé is a poised, classically styled Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most emblematic estates. Renowned for its unusually high proportion of Cabernet on the Right Bank, Figeac consistently delivers wines of freshness, structure, and finesse, and 2021 is no exception. This vintage captures the estate’s hallmark elegance in a cooler, more restrained year that highlights precision over power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château Figeac shows a deep, luminous ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both youth and refinement. The nose is finely etched rather than opulent: blackcurrant, wild raspberry, and red plum interwoven with graphite, cedar shavings, and tobacco leaf. Hints of violets, crushed herbs, and a subtle mineral note recall wet stone and warm earth. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with an emphasis on linearity and freshness. The Cabernet backbone brings fine, elongated tannins and a cool, dark-fruited profile—think cassis and blackberry—balanced by Merlot’s supple red fruits and Cabernet Franc’s floral lift and spice. Layers of cigar box, pencil lead, and cocoa emerge with air, carried by a vibrant acidity that gives the wine energy and length rather than sheer weight. The finish is long, precise, and saline, suggesting excellent aging potential. While accessible after a few hours in a decanter, this 2021 will benefit from several years in the cellar and should evolve gracefully for 15–20 years in good conditions.

Production
Château Figeac lies on the western plateau of Saint-Émilion, where its uniquely large gravel outcrops—more reminiscent of the Médoc than the Right Bank—define its identity. Three gravelly rises over a clay and sand subsoil provide superb drainage and are particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, giving Figeac its distinctive blend and character. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make the cut, especially crucial in a cooler, more challenging vintage like 2021. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction tailored to each plot to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannin structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—predominantly new—where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures on its lees, allowing complexity, texture, and aromatic depth to develop without overwhelming the finesse of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This vintage of Château Figeac is superbly versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, veal chops, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game birds like guinea fowl. Its refined structure also suits more nuanced pairings like truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, and mature, hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient, mainly to remove any sediment and allow the wine to unfurl.

Producer
Château Figeac is one of the most historic and prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion, with roots stretching back to antiquity and an estate identity firmly established by the 18th century. Long celebrated for its distinctive terroir and Cabernet-driven style, Figeac occupies a singular position on the Right Bank, often described as a bridge between Saint-Émilion and the great gravelly châteaux of the Médoc. The estate’s meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking have earned it consistent critical acclaim, culminating in its elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ status in the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification. Today, Château Figeac stands as a benchmark for elegance, longevity, and character in Bordeaux, with each vintage expressing both its storied past and its unwavering commitment to quality.
