In the glass, the 2021 Duhart-Milon shows a deep purple-ruby core that will gradually evolve towards garnet and brick-red hues with bottle age. The bouquet is layered and expressive: dark cherries and blackberries mingle with cassis, cedar wood, tobacco leaf and subtle graphite, underpinned by notes of vanilla, spice and a refined, well-integrated wood character from its oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm but silky attack, showcasing Pauillac’s hallmark combination of power and finesse. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon brings fresh blackcurrant, plum skin and a lifted, herbal freshness, while Merlot contributes supple texture, round fruit and an extra touch of complexity. Earthy undertones, hints of cigar box and fine-grained, playful tannins lead into a long, structured finish. In a cooler, more classical year like 2021, the acidity feels bright and energetic, giving the wine excellent drive and aging potential. Production
Château Duhart-Milon is situated on the western side of Pauillac, directly neighboring Château Lafite-Rothschild, and benefits from classic Médoc terroir: well-drained soils of fine gravel, sand and limestone over a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate. The vineyards, more than 70 hectares in size and averaging over 30 years of age, are predominantly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a smaller share of Cabernet Franc, perfectly suited to this gravelly plateau. Yields are kept deliberately low, and the harvest is carried out by hand to ensure a strict selection of healthy, optimally ripe grapes. Vinification is traditional and precise, with controlled fermentation in tanks to preserve purity of fruit and accurately reflect the character of the vintage. The young wine is then matured in French oak barriques—around 50% new—crafted in the estate’s own cooperage, for roughly 10 to 18 months depending on the year, allowing the oak to polish the tannins and add subtle spice without overshadowing the Pauillac identity.

Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a natural partner for classic, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte or ribeye steak, beef Wellington, and slow-braised beef or veal. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, duck breast, and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, truffle or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. In its youth, a decant of 1–2 hours will help open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a gentle, shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Duhart-Milon traces its roots back to the early 18th century, when the owner of Château Lafite, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, used the Milon vineyards as a sort of “second wine” source for his great estate. By around 1840, under the name Duhart-Milon, the property already held some 40 hectares of prime Pauillac vines and was recognized for producing wines of real pedigree, earning its place as a 4th Growth in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc. After a challenging mid-20th century, a new era of quality began when the Rothschild family (Lafite) acquired the estate and integrated it into Domaines Barons de Rothschild. With the benefit of shared expertise, investments in the vineyard and cellar, and a philosophy rooted in low yields, manual harvesting and sensitive vinification, Duhart-Milon has reclaimed its stature as one of Pauillac’s benchmark châteaux. Today it is celebrated for wines that combine the structure and depth of Pauillac with the finesse and elegance closely associated with Lafite.
