Description

The 2021 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Grand Cru Classé St-Julien in magnum format is a beautifully classical expression of Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most revered estates. In a cooler, more structured vintage, Ducru has crafted a wine of finesse, precision, and aromatic complexity, made even more ageworthy by the larger bottle size. This Grand Cru Classé captures the signature elegance of St-Julien—poised, refined, and deeply mineral—while the magnum format ensures a slower, more graceful evolution over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ducru-Beaucaillou shows a deep, garnet-ruby hue with violet reflections, suggesting both concentration and freshness. The nose is refined and layered, opening with blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and red plum, then unfolding into graphite, violet, cedar, and a touch of tobacco leaf. Subtle notes of graphite, crushed stone, and a hint of cocoa underscore the wine’s noble origin. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, classically proportioned Ducru with a cool-fruited profile and superb balance. Crisp cassis, black cherry, and redcurrant are framed by fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that reflects the character of the 2021 vintage. Savory undertones of pencil shavings, cigar box, and subtle spice add complexity, while the finish is long, focused, and saline, echoing dark fruit and mineral notes. In magnum, this wine is built for the long haul: it will drink well from around 2028 but has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for two to three decades or more.

Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the ‘beaux cailloux’—the beautiful large gravel stones that dominate its vineyard soils along the Gironde estuary in St-Julien. These deep Günzian gravels over sand and clay provide exceptional drainage, encourage deep root systems, and are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically forms the backbone of the blend alongside Merlot and small portions of other Bordeaux varieties. The 2021 vintage, marked by cooler conditions and meticulous selection, demanded precise vineyard work, including careful canopy management and strict sorting at harvest to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy berries. Grapes are harvested by hand plot by plot, then sorted and gently vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each parcel to express its character. Aging traditionally takes place in French oak barriques—predominantly new—where the wine matures on its fine lees, gaining complexity, polish, and integration before being bottled in magnum for extended cellaring.

Food & Serving
This 2021 Ducru-Beaucaillou magnum shines alongside refined, savory dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, côte de boeuf, beef Wellington, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, veal chops, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté, Gruyère, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. For current or near-term enjoyment, decanting a magnum for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its layered bouquet and soften the youthful structure; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the iconic estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification. Situated in the commune of St-Julien, the property has long been celebrated for producing wines that combine the power and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon with the appellation’s hallmark elegance and precision. Under the stewardship of the Borie family for several decades, Ducru-Beaucaillou has invested heavily in both vineyard and cellar, cementing its status as one of the top references in the Médoc. The château’s reputation for consistency, longevity, and a distinctive, mineral-driven style has made its wines highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, with top vintages regularly ranking among the finest reds in Bordeaux.
