Description

The 2021 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark white wines, produced in tiny quantities from centenarian Roussanne vines. This is a powerful yet refined white Châteauneuf that marries opulence with striking freshness, particularly in the cooler, more classical 2021 vintage. Beloved by collectors, it is a rare example of a southern Rhône white that can rival great Burgundy and age gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Roussanne Vieilles Vignes shows a luminous golden straw hue with hints of green at the rim, promising both richness and energy. The nose is deeply expressive and layered: ripe pear and white peach mingle with apricot, acacia blossom, honeysuckle, and notes of beeswax, fennel, and sweet spice, all underpinned by a saline, stony minerality. On the palate, this is full-bodied and textural, yet remarkably poised for such a concentrated southern white. Silky and mouthfilling, it offers flavors of stone fruits, ripe citrus, and quince, alongside hints of almond, chamomile, and subtle vanilla from sensitive oak aging. The 2021 vintage brings a vibrant line of acidity and a long, beautifully defined finish, with a gentle bitterness of citrus peel and herbs that adds complexity. Already compelling in its youth, this cuvée is famously ageworthy, easily evolving over 15–20 years or more, developing notes of honey, dried flowers, nuttiness, and truffle with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from some of Beaucastel’s oldest Roussanne vines—many over 80 years old—this cuvée is rooted in the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of rounded galets roulés (large river stones), clay-limestone soils, and sandy patches that help retain both heat and freshness. The vineyard is farmed organically (and effectively biodynamically), with low yields and careful, largely manual work in the vines to preserve the health and concentration of this fragile grape. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place predominantly in oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak, followed by aging on fine lees to build texture, depth, and complexity, while preserving the signature freshness and clarity of the 2021 vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines with rich, refined dishes: think lobster with butter or citrus, seared scallops, turbot or halibut in cream or beurre blanc, roast chicken with morel or truffle sauce, and elegant veal or poultry preparations. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, mild blue cheeses, and soft cheeses like Brie or Chaource. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow its full aromatic range to unfold. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open up; older vintages should be handled gently and decanted only briefly, mainly to separate from any sediment.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most revered estates, with roots in the region dating back to the 16th century and a modern history shaped by the Perrin family since the early 20th century. A pioneer of organic and later biodynamic viticulture in the Rhône, Beaucastel is renowned for its commitment to all 13 permitted Châteauneuf varieties and for producing both red and white wines of remarkable character and longevity. The Roussanne Vieilles Vignes cuvée, introduced in the 1980s, has become a reference point for great southern Rhône whites and is widely regarded as one of the finest expressions of Roussanne in the world.
