Description
The 2021 Château d'Armailhac Pauillac is a poised, classically styled Left Bank Bordeaux from one of Pauillac’s most historic estates. In this cooler, more traditional vintage, d’Armailhac leans into elegance and finesse rather than sheer power, offering a finely detailed expression of Cabernet-led Pauillac. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification and owned by the same Rothschild family as Mouton, it consistently delivers serious pedigree and value for the appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Château d'Armailhac shows a deep ruby-purple hue with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose opens with lifted aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and red plum, layered with graphite, cedar shavings, cigar box, and a subtle floral edge of violet and dried rose. Hints of crushed stone, baking spices, and a gentle leafy freshness underline the wine’s classic Pauillac character.
On the palate, this vintage is medium to medium-plus in body, with precise, fine-grained tannins and a refreshing line of acidity that gives the wine both structure and lift. Flavors of cassis, wild berries, and black cherry are interwoven with notes of tobacco leaf, pencil lead, and a touch of mocha and savory spice from barrel aging. The finish is long and focused, more about length and refinement than sheer opulence, making it especially approachable in its youth while still clearly built for the cellar. Expect peak drinking from around 2026–2038, with the potential to age gracefully longer in good conditions.
Production
Château d'Armailhac lies in the northern part of Pauillac, on classic deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The 2021 vintage, marked by cooler conditions and strict selection, allowed the estate to emphasize purity of fruit and terroir expression. The vineyards are harvested parcel by parcel, predominantly by hand, ensuring only perfectly ripe and healthy bunches enter the winery. Vinification typically follows a traditional Bordeaux approach: the grapes are destemmed, fermented in temperature-controlled vats, and macerated to extract color, aroma, and tannin, with careful pump-overs for finesse rather than excess power. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a portion new), where it gains texture, aromatic complexity, and integration before bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Pauillac is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, beef Wellington, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with roast duck, veal chops, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will usually suffice.
Producer
Château d'Armailhac is one of Pauillac’s historic classed growths, recognized as a Fifth Growth in the landmark 1855 Classification. Located between Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Pontet-Canet, the estate benefits from some of the appellation’s finest gravel terroirs. Originally known as Château Mouton d’Armailhacq and later Château d’Armailhacq, it was acquired by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family in the 1930s, bringing it into the same stable as Mouton Rothschild and Clerc Milon. Over the past few decades, substantial investment in the vineyards and cellar has elevated d’Armailhac’s quality, making it a highly regarded insider’s choice for Pauillac—offering classed-growth pedigree, distinctive character, and strong consistency across vintages.
