Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2021 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval Blanc is the rare white expression from one of Bordeaux’s most legendary estates. Crafted in tiny quantities, it captures the precision, freshness and understated luxury that define Cheval Blanc, but in a luminous, dry white. This is a collector-worthy bottle that bridges grand cru pedigree with the energy and finesse of the 2021 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Le Petit Cheval Blanc shows a pale, shimmering straw hue with green reflections, hinting at its tension and youth. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy: expect notes of white peach, crisp pear and citrus zest interwoven with jasmine, fresh herbs, wet stone and a discreet touch of fine oak spice. On the palate, the wine is pure, linear and elegant, driven by bright acidity and a beautifully silken texture. Sauvignon-driven citrus and orchard fruit are framed by saline minerality and subtle pastry and vanilla notes from its élevage, giving both depth and length. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent evolution over the next 8–12 years, possibly longer in this magnum format, where maturation is already slower and more graceful.

Production
Le Petit Cheval Blanc is sourced from carefully selected parcels of white varieties planted on the cooler, clay and gravel-influenced soils not far from Château Cheval Blanc in Saint‑Émilion. These vineyard sites, chosen for their natural freshness and ability to retain tension in warmer seasons, are typically planted to a majority of Sauvignon Blanc complemented by Sémillon for texture and complexity. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the most pristine fruit reaches the cellar. Fermentation generally takes place in a mix of oak barrels and larger vessels to balance aromatic intensity and structure, followed by maturation on fine lees with gentle bâtonnage. The result is a finely tuned, limited-production white Bordeaux that combines precision, minerality and subtle oak integration.

Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile gastronomic white, ideal with refined seafood and lighter dishes. Think oysters, scallops, turbot, lobster, sushi and sashimi, as well as delicate poultry, veal in cream sauces, or seasonal vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, fennel or artichokes. Fresh goat cheese, young Comté or aged Gruyère also make excellent companions. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to open. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a white-wine carafe can further enhance complexity, especially as the wine gains a few years of bottle age in this magnum.

Producer
Château Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most revered names, a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate in Saint‑Émilion with a history dating back to the 19th century. Long celebrated for producing some of the world’s most sought‑after red wines, Cheval Blanc has in recent years turned its meticulous attention and resources to crafting a world‑class dry white in Le Petit Cheval Blanc. This project reflects the estate’s deep understanding of terroir and precision viticulture, applying grand cru methods—low yields, hand harvesting, parcel selection and detail‑driven winemaking—to a small collection of white parcels. The result has quickly become one of the most talked‑about and coveted white wines in Bordeaux, further cementing Cheval Blanc’s status as a benchmark producer in the region.
