Description
Le Carillon de l'Angélus 2021 is the refined second wine of the legendary Château Angélus, offering a more approachable expression of this Saint-Émilion icon without sacrificing depth or class. Crafted with the same care, terroir and philosophy as the Grand Vin, it delivers a poised, modern Right Bank profile that is both luxurious and refreshingly drinkable. This cuvée reflects over two centuries of family stewardship, now guided by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and Thierry Grenié-de Boüard, the eighth generation at the helm.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Le Carillon de l'Angélus shows a medium to deep granat-violet hue, signaling both youthful intensity and elegant extraction. The nose is perfumed and inviting, with lifted floral notes of lavender and red roses, supported by baking spice and a vibrant core of redcurrant, blackberry tart, black raspberry and a twist of freshly cracked black pepper.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fine-boned and beautifully balanced, with a cool, fresh frame that reflects the vintage. Layers of dark and red berry fruit unfold gradually—blackberry, black raspberry and ripe redcurrant—wrapped in a firm but ultra-fine tannic structure. Subtle oak spice from French barrels adds polish rather than weight, leading to an energetic, mouthwatering finish. Already charming in its youth with decanting, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.
Production
Le Carillon de l'Angélus 2021 is rooted in the exceptional terroir of the south-facing slopes and foothills of Saint-Émilion, where the estate’s vineyards form a natural amphitheatre. Here, the interplay of clay and limestone ensures excellent water and mineral balance, with natural drainage provided by the slope. The grape varieties are carefully matched to soil type: Merlot, which makes up around 90% of the blend, is planted on the more clay-rich flanks, while Cabernet Franc, about 10%, thrives on sand-clay-limestone parcels at the foot of the slope. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with the same meticulous attention as the Grand Vin. After fermentation, Le Carillon de l'Angélus is aged in French oak barrels, approximately 60% of which are new, lending finesse, gentle spice and structure without overwhelming the purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine’s elegant structure and layered dark fruit make it a versatile partner at the table. It shines with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled or pan-seared duck breast, beef tenderloin with mushroom jus, or veal chops with truffle-scented sauces; it also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes featuring lentils, wild mushrooms or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. In its youth, a decant of 1–2 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the floral and spice notes to fully unfurl; with more bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant will usually suffice.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of the most renowned estates in Saint-Émilion, long recognized at the very top of the appellation’s hierarchy and celebrated for its opulent yet finely structured wines. The Boüard de Laforest family has owned and cultivated these vineyards for over 200 years, passing down a deep respect for terroir and an unwavering pursuit of quality from generation to generation. Today, the estate is led by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the third woman in the family’s history to direct the domaine, alongside her cousin Thierry Grenié-de Boüard. Under their stewardship, Angélus has maintained its reputation as a benchmark Right Bank producer, combining traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful innovation, and Le Carillon de l'Angélus stands as a testament to this heritage—an elegant second wine that carries the signature of one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious châteaux.
