Description

The 2021 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion in magnum format is a poised, classical expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. In a cooler, more restrained vintage, Angélus has crafted a wine that leans into elegance, precision and aromatic lift rather than sheer power. The magnum bottle not only elevates the sense of occasion, it also offers an ideal format for long-term cellaring and graceful evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Angélus shows a deep ruby to garnet hue with vibrant reflections, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is wonderfully refined: expect layers of black cherries, wild raspberries and cassis woven with violet, graphite, cedar shavings and a touch of fine spice—clove, star anise and a hint of tobacco leaf. On the palate, this vintage is medium to full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a cool-fruited profile that feels lifted and pure. Silky, polished tannins frame flavors of ripe red and black berries, plum skin, florals and subtle savory notes of cocoa nib, pencil lead and fresh herbs. The finish is long and linear, carried by vibrant acidity that promises excellent aging potential. In magnum, you can comfortably lay this down for 15–25 years, during which it should gain in complexity, tertiary notes and textural finesse.

Production
Château Angélus sits on the prime slopes just outside the town of Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone soils on the côtes and sandy-clay parcels on the lower slopes provide an ideal home for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2021 vintage, marked by cooler conditions and strict selection, favored Cabernet Franc’s aromatic intensity and structure, resulting in a blend that often leans a touch more toward this grape than in warmer years. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with parcel-by-parcel selection in the vineyard and sorting at the chai to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. This careful, detail-driven approach is designed to highlight Angélus’s signature combination of richness, aromatics and precision, particularly important in a more classical year like 2021.

Food & Serving
The 2021 Château Angélus is an excellent partner to refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, filet mignon with truffle jus, or pigeon and duck breast. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes—wild mushrooms, veal sweetbreads, and well-aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic nuance and structural detail. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open and soften; as it matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be sufficient to remove sediment and let the bouquet fully unfold.

Producer
Château Angélus is one of the most illustrious names in Saint-Émilion, long recognized at the very top tier of the appellation and historically classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé (A). Family-owned and run for generations by the de Boüard de Laforest family, the estate takes its name from the church bells (the ‘Angelus’) that could historically be heard ringing from three surrounding churches in the vineyards. Over the past several decades, Angélus has become a benchmark for richly textured yet increasingly refined Right Bank wines, pioneering meticulous vineyard work, stricter selection and modern yet sensitive winemaking. Its rise to the summit of Saint-Émilion and global acclaim has cemented Angélus as a reference point for collectors and serious Bordeaux drinkers around the world.
