Description

2021 Château Angélus 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion is a poised and beautifully refined expression of one of Bordeaux’s most sought‑after estates. In this cooler, classic‑style vintage, Angélus leans into elegance over sheer power, delivering layered aromatics, silky structure and remarkable freshness. A high proportion of Cabernet Franc – a hallmark of the estate’s identity – gives precision, lift and an unmistakably aristocratic profile.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Angélus shows a deep, shimmering ruby-purple hue with vibrant highlights at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose opens slowly but precisely: bright blue fruit and black cherry intertwine with ripe blackberry, wild raspberry, and notes of violets, crushed stone, graphite, and subtle spice. Hints of cocoa, truffle, cedar, and a delicate tobacco leaf complexity emerge with air, underpinned by a refined mineral core. On the palate, this vintage is all about finesse and definition rather than sheer weight. The attack is silky and pure, with superfine, cashmere-like tannins that coat the mouth without heaviness. Layers of black and blue fruit – blackcurrant, black plum, blueberry – are lifted by lively acidity, while nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cigar box and aromatic herbs unfold across the mid‑palate. The high Cabernet Franc component brings energy, structure and a long, floral‑mineral finish that lingers with impressive precision. While already enchanting in its youth after a proper decant, the 2021 Angélus has the balance and tannic backbone to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, leather and forest floor over time.

Production
The Angélus vineyard is set on the south-facing slopes and foot of Saint‑Émilion in a natural amphitheatre, an exceptional terroir that enhances warmth and promotes optimal ripening. Here, the interplay of clay and limestone ensures superb water and mineral balance, with Merlot planted primarily on the more clay-rich flanks and Cabernet Franc rooted in the sand‑clay‑limestone parcels at the foot of the slope. The soils benefit from natural drainage down the incline, helping maintain vine health even in challenging seasons. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then sorted with extreme care to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification is tailored to each plot, with gentle extractions to preserve the vintage’s finesse and manage the naturally abundant tannins. Aging takes place in carefully selected French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to add texture and complexity while keeping the wine’s purity, freshness and identity at the forefront.

Food & Serving
The 2021 Château Angélus is a superb partner to refined cuisine, especially dishes that echo its depth without overpowering its elegance. Think roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised veal, beef tenderloin, duck breast with a red wine reduction, truffle‑scented risotto, or game birds with wild mushrooms. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or mature Pecorino also make outstanding companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and textural finesse. Decanting is recommended for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften, while mature bottles (after a decade or more) may need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Château Angélus is one of the great names of Saint‑Émilion, a family‑run estate now led by Stéphanie de Boüard‑Rivoal and her cousin Thierry Grenié‑de Boüard, the eighth generation of the Boüard de Laforest family at the helm. The estate’s history on these slopes dates back to the 18th century, with Angélus steadily rising to the very top of the Saint‑Émilion hierarchy thanks to an unwavering pursuit of quality. Under the visionary stewardship of Hubert de Boüard, the château gained international recognition for its meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking, culminating in its promotion to the elite Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’ in 2012, placing it among a tiny group of the appellation’s most revered properties. Today, Angélus stands as a benchmark for Cabernet Franc‑driven Right Bank Bordeaux, celebrated for wines that combine opulence with grace, and for a philosophy grounded in integrity, hard work, humility and respect for its remarkable terroir.
