Description
The 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a powerful yet finely polished expression of Napa Valley mountain Cabernet from one of the region’s most iconic hillsides. Sourced from high-elevation, estate vineyards on Pritchard Hill, it marries richness and structure with remarkable aromatic complexity. Crafted from 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot and aged entirely in new French oak, this limited-release vintage is widely regarded as one of the standout wines of the 2021 Napa harvest, following the non-released 2020 due to wildfires.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pritchard Hill Cabernet is deeply saturated, nearly opaque ruby-purple, hinting immediately at its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, unfurling with blackcurrant and cassis, ripe blackberry, and boysenberry, framed by notes of sweet cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and violets, with a generous halo of fine French oak—sandalwood, vanilla bean, and nutmeg.
On the palate, this is a majestic, full-bodied mountain Cabernet that captures the essence of Pritchard Hill’s rugged terroir: dense, dark berry fruit is wrapped in powerful yet velvety tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, black plum, and ripe blackberry are interwoven with savory dried herbs, anise, dark chocolate, and warm baking spices, leading to a long, impeccably polished finish. The structure and depth suggest excellent aging potential; while already impressive with sufficient aeration, this wine will reward patience over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and nuance in bottle.
Production
Pritchard Hill’s estate vineyards sit at elevations up to about 1,800 feet above sea level on the eastern side of Napa Valley, where rocky, volcanic soils, excellent drainage, and significant diurnal temperature swings produce small, intensely flavored berries. Chappellet farms its vineyards organically, a certification it has held since 2012, reflecting a long-term commitment to sustainable, terroir-driven viticulture. The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand to ensure pristine fruit selection and then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to capture the purity and concentration of the mountain fruit, followed by élevage in 100% new French oak barrels, which contributes structure, spice, and textural refinement while preserving the wine’s distinctive sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, cellar-worthy Cabernet that shines alongside equally refined, deeply flavored dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye or Côte de Boeuf, lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, grilled venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with rich, earthy components like wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmesan, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to soften the firm tannins and allow the complex layers to fully emerge; as the wine matures, a shorter decant of around an hour will typically suffice.
Producer
Founded in 1967 by Donn and Molly Chappellet, Chappellet was one of the early pioneers of high-elevation viticulture in Napa Valley and among the first to recognize the extraordinary potential of Pritchard Hill. The family established their estate vineyards in the mid-1960s and completed the winery in 1968, creating what has since become one of Napa’s benchmark properties for mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the decades, Chappellet’s Pritchard Hill Cabernet has gained a reputation as one of the region’s most distinctive and collectible wines, regularly earning high critical acclaim and helping to cement Pritchard Hill’s status as a world-class terroir. Today, the family remains at the helm, continuing a legacy of meticulous farming, environmental stewardship—including organic certification and solar-powered operations—and consistently producing some of Napa Valley’s most sought-after red wines.
