Description
2021 Caiarossa is a polished, characterful red from the coastal hills of Tuscany, crafted as the estate’s flagship blend. Marrying Bordeaux varieties with classic Tuscan grapes, it offers a modern yet distinctly Italian expression of the region’s maritime terroir. This vintage continues Caiarossa’s philosophy of biodynamic farming and gentle winemaking, delivering depth, elegance, and a strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Caiarossa shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe black cherry and plum are lifted by notes of violets, Mediterranean herbs, and sweet spices, evolving towards graphite, cedar, and a subtle balsamic edge as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is a structured yet supple Tuscan red, with silky tannins wrapped around a core of dark fruit—blackberry, morello cherry, and cassis—balanced by lively acidity. Hints of cocoa, licorice, tobacco leaf, and savory earth add complexity, leading to a long, mineral-tinged finish that reflects its coastal origins. Still very youthful, the 2021 has the backbone and intensity to age gracefully for 10–15 years, gradually gaining tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs, and truffle with proper cellaring.
Production
Caiarossa is located near Riparbella on the Tuscan coast, where vineyards sit on hillsides overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The terroir is a mosaic of soils—clay, limestone, and gravel—with good drainage and constant sea breezes that help preserve freshness and aromatics in the grapes. Farmed according to biodynamic principles, the estate relies on careful, largely manual vineyard work and selective hand-harvesting, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, each grape variety is vinified separately, often in concrete or large oak vats, with measured maceration to extract color and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak barriques and larger casks, with a thoughtful use of new wood, before blending and further maturation to harmonize the components and highlight the elegance and complexity of the final cuvée.
Food & Serving
2021 Caiarossa is a natural match for refined Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes, particularly grilled or roasted red meats, bistecca alla fiorentina, lamb with rosemary, and slow-braised beef or veal. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle risottos, porcini mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s layered complexity, while more mature bottles can be gently double-decanted shortly before serving.
Producer
Founded in the late 1990s, Caiarossa quickly established itself as one of the most intriguing estates on the Tuscan coast, embracing biodynamic viticulture and a meticulous, terroir-driven approach. Situated in Riparbella, just north of Bolgheri, the winery has become known for its sculpted, Mediterranean-style blends that combine international varieties—such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petit Verdot—with indigenous Sangiovese and Alicante. Under the ownership and guidance of experienced wine families, Caiarossa has earned a strong reputation for consistency and quality, helping to elevate the profile of the upper Maremma as a source of distinctive, age-worthy Tuscan reds.
