Description

The 2021 Bodegas Marañones “Marañones” is a pure Garnacha from the striking high-altitude slopes of the Sierra de Gredos, west of Madrid. Crafted to express a single, emblematic place rather than power or extraction, it shows a Burgundian sense of finesse, floral lift and precision that feels refreshingly different from the stereotypical warm, jammy Garnacha styles. Produced in tiny quantities, it offers a focused snapshot of this granitic mountain terroir in a particularly elegant and detailed vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Marañones presents a luminous, pale to medium ruby color with a delicate, almost translucent core—more reminiscent of fine Pinot Noir than traditional, darker Garnacha. The nose is perfumed and expressive, with notes of wild strawberries, redcurrants and raspberries layered over violet and rose petals, hints of fresh herbs, and a subtle mineral edge that recalls crushed quartz and wet stone. On the palate, the wine is refined and energetic rather than heavy, with juicy red berry fruit—redcurrant, strawberry and a touch of cherry—wrapped in a fine, almost grainy tannic structure that clearly reflects its granitic soils. There is a beautiful tension between the wine’s fleshy, mouth-filling core and its crisp, vibrant acidity, giving it lift and length. Floral nuances and a cool, stony salinity run through the finish, which is long, precise and elegant, with no overt oak influence. While already charming in its youth, this vintage has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over 6–10 years, gaining complexity and further integrating its mineral and floral dimensions.

Production
The Marañones cuvée is sourced exclusively from three old-vine parcels—Olivos, La Ladera and Peña Baja—planted with 50–70-year-old Garnacha at 750–850 meters above sea level in the Sierra de Gredos. Here, the vineyards are oriented to the north, preserving freshness in the hot Spanish climate, and rooted primarily in decomposed granitic soils rich in quartz, with pockets of slate and sand that enhance finesse and aromatic lift. The estate is farmed organically, with great attention to biodiversity and soil health. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard followed by a second triage at the winery to retain only the healthiest, most perfectly ripe bunches. Whole clusters are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place with native yeasts in 33 hL wooden vats, allowing a slow, natural vinification that preserves the purity of fruit and terroir character. The wine is then aged for 12 months on its fine lees in 500-liter French oak barrels, chosen to avoid any dominance of wood flavors, and it is bottled unfiltered and without sulfur stabilization to keep the wine as authentic and unadulterated as possible.

Food & Serving
This elegant, high-altitude Garnacha is an exceptionally versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with dishes that echo its finesse rather than overpowering it. Try it with herb-roasted chicken, grilled pork tenderloin, charcuterie, roast duck with cherries, or Mediterranean-style lamb with thyme and rosemary. It also shines alongside mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables, and semi-hard cheeses like Manchego or aged Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity; a light chill is preferable to serving it too warm. Decanting for 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up its floral and mineral nuances, especially in its first 3–5 years of life.

Producer
Bodegas Marañones is one of the key names behind the modern renaissance of the Sierra de Gredos, a mountainous region that has rapidly gained cult status for its high-altitude, old-vine Garnacha. The estate focuses on small, vineyard-driven wines from tiny, patchwork parcels—much like Burgundy or Priorat—each expressing a distinct facet of granitic and slate-rich terroir. Now part of the esteemed Pago de Carraovejas group, which includes top names such as Pago de Carraovejas in Ribera del Duero, Ossian in Rueda and Viña Mein in Galicia, Marañones benefits from the group’s rigorous quality standards while maintaining its own strong identity and terroir focus. Within the Gredos landscape, Bodegas Marañones has become a benchmark producer for elegant, site-expressive Garnacha that redefines what Spanish mountain reds can be, consistently crafting wines that sit firmly in Spain’s quality ‘Premier League.’
