Description
2021 B Vintners Haarlem to Hope is a characterful Cape white blend that captures the spirit of South Africa’s historic winelands in the glass. Crafted by Bruwer Vintners in Stellenbosch, this wine brings together old-vine fruit and sensitive, modern winemaking to deliver depth, nuance, and real sense of place. Named for the early Dutch trade route from Haarlem to the Cape, it pays tribute to the region’s long, intertwined history of exploration, culture, and wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Haarlem to Hope shows a pale straw color with a glint of green, hinting at its freshness and energy. The nose is complex and inviting: ripe stone fruit (white peach, apricot) layered with preserved lemon, yellow apple, and hints of orange blossom, chamomile, and fennel seed. Subtle notes of beeswax, lanolin and a gentle nuttiness suggest the presence of old vines and careful élevage.
On the palate, this is a textural yet precise white blend, typically led by Chenin Blanc with supporting heritage varieties such as Sémillon and Muscat. A vibrant line of acidity keeps the wine taut and refreshing, while flavors of quince, pear, lemon curd and lightly spiced citrus peel fan out across the mid-palate. There’s a fine, almost salty mineral edge and a touch of savory lees character that adds grip and length. The finish is long and layered, suggesting this vintage will evolve beautifully over the next 5–8 years, gaining additional honeyed and nutty complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Bruwer Vintners source the fruit for Haarlem to Hope from selected sites in Stellenbosch, where decomposed granite and sandstone soils, combined with maritime influences from False Bay, give natural freshness and vivid minerality. Many of the vineyards used for this blend are older, low-yielding blocks, which contribute concentration and character to the finished wine. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates in the cool of the morning to preserve aromatic purity and acidity, with each variety and parcel picked at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately, often with gentle whole-bunch pressing and a combination of natural and carefully selected yeasts. Fermentation and maturation most often take place in a mix of stainless steel and seasoned oak, with extended time on fine lees to build texture and complexity while keeping the oak influence understated. The final blend is assembled after meticulous tasting to achieve balance between freshness, aromatics, and structure.
Food & Serving
The 2021 Haarlem to Hope is a versatile food wine that shines with flavourful, but not overly heavy, dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roast poultry, herb-crusted pork, seared line fish, and shellfish such as prawns, scallops, or mussels in a light cream or citrus sauce. It also works well with roast vegetables, creamy risottos, Cape Malay–influenced curries with moderate heat, and semi-soft cheeses like young Gouda or Comté. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine unfold its layers, particularly in its youth.
Producer
Bruwer Vintners is the brainchild of cousins who share a deep family history in the Cape winelands and a passion for expressing Stellenbosch’s more nuanced, site-specific character. Operating under the B Vintners label, they have become known for championing heritage varieties such as Chenin Blanc and Sémillon, often sourcing from older, dry-farmed vineyards that might otherwise have been overlooked. From their base in Stellenbosch, they focus on small-batch, hands-on winemaking that emphasizes purity, balance, and terroir over power or excessive oak. Wines like Haarlem to Hope have helped establish Bruwer Vintners as one of the region’s most thoughtful and exciting modern producers, contributing to South Africa’s reputation for world-class, ageworthy Cape blends.
