Description

The 2021 Antonio Caggiano Fiano di Avellino Riserva Vigna Isca is a refined, single-parcel expression of one of southern Italy’s most noble white grapes. Crafted from the finest Fiano vines within the DOCG Fiano di Avellino, this Riserva captures both the elegance and intensity that have made the appellation a benchmark for ageworthy Italian whites. Released only after extended maturation, it offers a more structured, complex take on Fiano designed for serious wine lovers and collectors alike. As a Riserva from the prized Vigna Isca parcel, this wine stands apart for its low-yield fruit, higher elevation origins, and careful élevage in oak. The combination of clay and limestone soils at around 400 meters above sea level imparts both richness and minerality, while the extended aging—first in stainless steel and oak, then in bottle—builds depth and textural finesse. Although a relatively new cuvée (its debut vintage was 2020), it draws on the long tradition of Fiano in Campania, a grape whose roots in the region stretch back to antiquity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Vigna Isca Riserva shows a luminous straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, deepening slightly toward a pale gold rim as it catches the light—an early hint at both freshness and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe citrus and orchard fruit at the core: think lemon zest, bergamot, and juicy pear, joined by white peach and subtle tropical hints. Underneath, a distinctly mineral streak evokes crushed stone and chalk, framed by delicate notes of acacia blossom, wild herbs, honeycomb, and a gentle toast and vanilla nuance from its time in oak. On the palate, this is a structured, textural Fiano with real presence. A vibrant, saline acidity runs through the wine, balancing its generous mid-palate and giving it a long, precise line. Flavors of lemon curd, pear, and yellow plum mingle with almond, subtle spice, and a flinty, smoky edge. The oak is finely integrated, contributing volume and creaminess rather than overt oakiness. The finish is long and savory, with lingering citrus, nuts, and mineral notes. Thanks to its Riserva-level concentration and careful élevage, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; it should evolve beautifully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining complexity in the direction of honey, dried herbs, and deeper nutty tones while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
Vigna Isca is sourced from selected parcels within the Fiano di Avellino DOCG, including sites in the Comune di Lapio, an area long recognized for producing some of the most refined and mineral Fiano in Campania. The vineyards sit at around 400 meters above sea level, where cooler nights preserve acidity and aromatic lift, while warm days ensure full ripening. The soils are a mix of clay and limestone, a classic combination for Fiano that brings both weight and tension: clay lending concentration and texture, limestone contributing salinity and a clean, stony finish. Grapes are carefully harvested, typically by hand, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected for this top cuvée. Fermentation takes place at low temperature in stainless-steel tanks to safeguard the grape’s delicate aromatics and natural freshness. After fermentation, the wine is matured for about 12 months in oak barrels, where it gains complexity, structure, and a subtle, refined spice, followed by a further 6 months of bottle aging before release to harmonize its components and bring extra polish to the palate.

Food & Serving
This Riserva Fiano is a versatile gastronomic white that pairs beautifully with elevated Mediterranean cuisine and richly flavored dishes. It is an ideal partner for seafood such as grilled or baked sea bass, turbot, or branzino, especially with lemon, capers, or aromatic herbs. It also shines with shellfish—think seared scallops, langoustines, or lobster—as well as with risotti (particularly seafood or saffron), creamy pasta with mushrooms, or roasted poultry and veal in light cream or citrus-based sauces. Its savory, mineral backbone and subtle oak notes also make it a fine match for semi-aged cheeses and richer goat’s cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness while allowing its texture and complexity to emerge. A short decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended for younger bottles like the 2021, helping the wine open up aromatically and soften its structure, especially if you are serving it with more complex dishes.

Producer
The Antonio Caggiano estate is one of Campania’s most respected and quality-driven wineries, based in Taurasi, a historic hilltop town that has long served as a cultural and viticultural heart of the region. Surrounded by ancient churches, chapels, and traditional architecture, the winery is steeped in the folklore and heritage of Irpinia, a place where wine has been intertwined with local life for centuries. Founded with a clear focus on expressing native grape varieties such as Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico at the highest level, Caggiano has earned a reputation as a benchmark producer, frequently garnering strong, consistent reviews from leading international wine critics. Their wines, including this Fiano di Avellino Riserva Vigna Isca, are often featured in top-tier selections—such as Bottle Hero’s own Grand Cru range—thanks to their combination of authenticity, terroir transparency, and polished craftsmanship that highlight the true potential of Campania’s great appellations.
