Description
The 2021 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru is a refined, Chardonnay-only white Burgundy from one of the most prized Premier Cru sites in Puligny. Crafted by Alvina Pernot and her husband Philippe Abadie, it captures the tension, precision and elegance that have made Les Pucelles a benchmark for the village. Early harvesting and a light touch in the cellar result in a wine that feels both classically Burgundian and distinctly contemporary in its freshness and clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru shows a luminous, pale straw colour with green glints that hint at its youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with pure citrus tones of lemon zest and grapefruit, joined by white flowers, acacia blossom and a fine chalky minerality. With air, more depth emerges: subtle notes of apricot and white peach, a touch of ginger and a whisper of toasted almond.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet finely etched, balancing richness with a vivid, mouth-watering acidity. Layers of ripe lemon, yellow stone fruit and a gentle, spicy ginger note unfold over a firm mineral spine, giving both texture and precision. A discreet nutty nuance and a hint of creaminess from barrel ageing add dimension without ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, saline and refined, with a lingering impression of chalk and citrus peel. While already compelling in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining complexity, more honeyed notes and deeper hazelnut tones with time in bottle.
Production
Les Pucelles is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most esteemed Premier Cru vineyards, sitting just below the Grand Crus on limestone-rich soils with fine clay topsoil that naturally favour Chardonnay of great finesse and minerality. Alvina Pernot and Philippe Abadie pursue an early harvest to capture tension and aromatic brightness, picking by hand to ensure meticulous selection of healthy, perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, their philosophy is one of minimal intervention: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentations and élevage in French oak (with a restrained use of new barrels) to frame, rather than dominate, the wine’s character. The wine is aged on its fine lees to build texture and complexity, with careful racking and minimal fining or filtration to preserve purity and a strong sense of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru is a superb match for refined seafood and delicate white meat dishes: think turbot or sole in beurre blanc, seared scallops, poached lobster, roasted chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream or vin jaune-inspired sauce. It also pairs beautifully with subtly creamy cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or aged goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to let the aromatics unfurl without losing tension. For young bottles, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help open the nose and soften the structure; older vintages should be handled more delicately, with a brief, careful decant only if necessary to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Alvina Pernot is a rising star in Puligny-Montrachet, rooted in one of the village’s most respected grower families. Granddaughter of the famed Burgundy vigneron Paul Pernot, Alvina established her own domaine together with her husband, Philippe Abadie, bringing a fresh, detail-focused approach to some of Puligny’s finest terroirs. Their holdings in top sites such as Les Pucelles allow them to produce wines that are both deeply authentic and finely tuned to contemporary tastes, with an emphasis on precision, minerality and energy. In a short time, the domaine has attracted critical acclaim and high scores from leading publications like Vinous and Decanter, marking it out as one of the most exciting new names in the Côte de Beaune.
