Description
The 2021 Alvina Pernot Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum is a pristine expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted white wine terroirs, presented in the highly collectible magnum format. Crafted in minuscule quantities, this Grand Cru marries remarkable depth and power with the crystalline precision and elegance that define great white Burgundy. The 2021 vintage, marked by low yields and excellent concentration, has produced a wine of both tension and refinement that will reward patient cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a luminous pale gold hue with green highlights, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is complex and layered: think white flowers, citrus blossom, and crushed limestone alongside ripe orchard fruits—pear, white peach, and a touch of golden apple—woven with delicate notes of hazelnut, fresh butter, and a subtle hint of vanilla and spice from judicious oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is at once powerful and finely etched. A core of concentrated fruit—meyer lemon, ripe pear, and stone fruits—sits atop a spine of racy acidity and pronounced mineral drive. The texture is silky yet structured, with a creamy mid-palate that never feels heavy thanks to the wine’s superb freshness. The finish is long, saline, and precise, leaving lingering notes of citrus zest, fine spice, and chalky minerality. In magnum, this 2021 has excellent aging potential: it will begin to show beautifully within 4–5 years from the vintage and can evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more under proper cellar conditions.
Production
Sourced from the hallowed Grand Cru terroir of Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet on the border of Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, this wine reflects a mosaic of thin, limestone-rich soils with clay and excellent drainage that naturally limits yields and amplifies concentration. The vines, rooted deeply in this celebrated slope, benefit from ideal exposure, allowing for slow, even ripening and superb aromatic complexity. Harvesting is done by hand in small crates to protect the integrity of the fruit, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe Chardonnay grapes make it into the press. Gentle, whole-bunch pressing preserves delicacy and purity, while fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add subtle texture and complexity rather than overt woodiness. The wine then ages on fine lees, with careful bâtonnage as appropriate to the vintage, building mid-palate weight and nuanced aromas while retaining the tension and precision that define Alvina Pernot’s style.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is an exceptional partner for refined cuisine. It shines alongside luxurious seafood dishes such as lobster with beurre blanc, turbot or sole meunière, seared scallops, and monkfish, as well as high-quality sushi and sashimi. It also matches beautifully with rich poultry preparations like roast chicken with morels, Bresse chicken in cream sauce, or veal in delicate jus, and can elevate fine cheeses such as aged Comté, Beaufort, or mild goat cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to blossom without losing precision. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended, especially in magnum, to let the wine fully open and display its layered complexity.
Producer
Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting young names in Puligny-Montrachet, descending from the famed Pernot family, long established in the village and known for their benchmark white Burgundies. After working alongside her grandfather, the renowned vigneron Paul Pernot, Alvina established her own label with access to some of the family’s finest holdings, including top Premier and Grand Cru sites. Her approach combines traditional Burgundian craftsmanship—hand harvesting, meticulous vineyard care, and sensitive use of oak—with a contemporary focus on precision, purity, and terroir transparency. In a short time, her wines have gained significant attention from Burgundy enthusiasts and critics alike, positioning her as a rising star and a key figure in the new generation shaping the future of Côte de Beaune whites.
