Description
The 2021 Alvina Pernot Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a luminous expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted white wine terroirs. Crafted in tiny quantities, this Grand Cru marries precision and power, offering a deeply layered yet finely etched Chardonnay that reflects the elegance of the cooler 2021 vintage. For collectors and Burgundy devotees, it’s a wine that captures both the history of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and the rising star status of Alvina Pernot in a single, compelling bottling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet shows a pale to medium straw color with greenish reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is intensely perfumed yet refined, opening with white flowers, acacia and hawthorn, followed by notes of fresh lemon zest, ripe pear, white peach and crushed limestone. Subtle layers of almond, hazelnut cream, brioche and a whisper of vanilla and sweet spice emerge with air, all wrapped in a cool, stony minerality.
On the palate, this Grand Cru is both concentrated and crystalline. The attack is taut and focused, with a core of citrus (Meyer lemon, grapefruit), stone fruits and a saline, mouthwatering edge. The mid-palate is expansive and silky, showing impressive depth without heaviness, as fine oak integration adds texture rather than overt flavor. A vibrant line of acidity drives the wine through a long, persistent finish marked by chalk, citrus peel and delicate pastry notes. While already incredibly expressive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential over 10–15 years or more under proper cellar conditions, with added complexity of honeyed, nutty and truffled nuances emerging over time.
Production
Sourced from the famed Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, this wine comes from limestone-rich, clay-limestone soils that are prized for producing Chardonnays of both intensity and finesse. The vineyard lies on the lower slopes of the Côte de Beaune near Puligny-Montrachet, where optimal sun exposure, well-drained soils and cool night temperatures contribute to slow, even ripening and remarkable aromatic precision. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve fruit integrity, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine clusters make it into the press. Gentle pressing, followed by fermentation in oak barrels (a portion new, carefully calibrated to avoid overwhelming the terroir), allows the wine to develop texture and complexity while retaining purity. Extended maturation on fine lees, with minimal intervention, deepens the wine’s mid-palate and length, resulting in a Grand Cru that eloquently translates its noble origin.
Food & Serving
This Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet is a natural partner for refined, delicately prepared dishes that match its intensity and elegance. Think lobster with beurre blanc, seared scallops, turbot or sole with a light cream or beurre blanc, roasted chicken with morels, creamy risottos, or high-quality aged Comté and other soft, creamy cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl without losing precision. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open and express its full range of aromas and texture; as it ages and becomes more delicate, simply opening the bottle a little ahead of serving is often sufficient.
Producer
Alvina Pernot is part of the next generation of Burgundy vignerons bringing fresh energy and precision to some of the region’s most hallowed terroirs. A member of the extended Pernot family of Puligny-Montrachet—long associated with benchmark white Burgundies—she has quickly earned a reputation for crafting wines of clarity, elegance and terroir transparency. Working with choice parcels in Puligny and its Grand Crus, including Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Alvina focuses on meticulous vineyard work, careful picking decisions and a restrained, finely tuned use of oak. Although still relatively young as a domaine, her label is already highly regarded among Burgundy enthusiasts, and her bottlings from Grand Cru sites are considered some of the most compelling, terroir-driven expressions emerging from the Côte de Beaune today.
