Description
The 2021 Alvina Pernot Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a powerful, luxurious white Burgundy that captures the full breadth and depth of one of the Côte de Beaune’s most revered terroirs. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay and sourced from the famed Bâtard-Montrachet climat, it marries richness and precision in a way only great Grand Cru can. Positioned where Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet meet, this wine stands out for its layered complexity, polished texture, and exceptional critical acclaim, including 95 points from Decanter.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Bâtard-Montrachet shows a luminous, pale gold color with greenish reflections, hinting at both its youth and intensity. The nose opens with refined aromas of citrus and lime zest, followed by orange peel, ripe orchard fruits, and subtle floral notes. Underneath the fruit lies a fine mineral streak and delicate hints of butter and cream, all integrated rather than overt, suggesting both power and finesse.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, yet impeccably balanced. Flavors of ripe apple, lemon curd, and stone fruit unfold over a silken, almost creamy mouthfeel, supported by a vibrant, chalky minerality. Nuances of fresh cream, beurre noisette and a faint salinity add depth and complexity to the long, persistent finish. The 2021 vintage offers a beautiful combination of concentration and tension, making this a Grand Cru with excellent aging potential; it will reward careful cellaring over 10–15 years or more, gaining additional layers of hazelnut, honey, and brioche with time.
Production
Bâtard-Montrachet is situated on the mid-slope where Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet converge, directly adjoining the legendary Montrachet itself. Here, east-facing vines catch the morning sun, while the limestone-rich, well-drained soils with layers of clay and stones give the wines their hallmark power, density, and mineral backbone. At Domaine Alvina Pernot, the Chardonnay is typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. In the cellar, a classic Burgundian approach is followed: gentle pressing of whole clusters, fermentation and élevage in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) to add texture and subtle spice, and extended aging on fine lees to enhance the wine’s creaminess, depth, and longevity, all while maintaining the precision of this great terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a quintessential high-gastronomy white Burgundy, ideal with rich, refined dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a creamy shellfish sauce, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roast chicken with morel cream, or veal in delicate white wine sauces. It also pairs beautifully with fine, aged cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or a mature Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F), allowing the temperature to rise slightly in the glass so the full aromatic spectrum can emerge. For a young vintage like 2021, decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended to help the wine open and reveal its layered complexity.
