Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grosses Gewächs shows a pale straw to light lemon color with glints of green, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is refined yet intense, opening with flinty, smoky mineral notes and freshly squeezed lemon, supported by hints of lime zest, white peach, crushed slate and a delicate herbal nuance. On the palate, it is silk-smooth in texture yet driven by a vibrant, razor-sharp acidity. The wine is distinctly stony and saline, with crystalline mineral tones wrapped around flavors of lemon, grapefruit and subtle stone fruit. There is a quiet power here: tightly wound today, with a long, spicy, well-structured and firmly mineral finish that lingers. Still somewhat restrained in its youth, this 2020 Juffer GG has excellent aging potential; it will gain further complexity, layering and aromatic expression over the next 5–15 years and beyond under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Brauneberger Juffer is one of the Mosel’s great steep-slope vineyards, characterized by heat-retaining, weathered blue and grey slate soils that give Riesling its hallmark precision, salinity and fine-boned structure. The 2020 growing season brought an early, beautiful spring, followed by a warm summer with peaks around 35°C, balanced by welcome rainfall along the Middle Mosel that ensured continuous water supply to the vines. Harvest began on 21 September under cool nights, allowing slow, optimal flavor development and perfectly healthy, golden grapes. Picking was done in multiple selective passes (Lesegänge) to capture peak ripeness for each parcel and quality level, ranging all the way up to Auslese and Goldkapsel for the estate as a whole. In the cellar, the Juffer GG is handled gently and vinified traditionally: careful pressing, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation (typically with a strong emphasis on preserving terroir purity), and élevage on fine lees in stainless steel and/or traditional vessels, with minimal intervention to highlight the site’s clear, radiant vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling is superb with refined, delicately flavored dishes that echo its freshness and precision. Think oysters, scallops, sashimi, ceviche, or simply grilled white fish with lemon and herbs; it also shines alongside lightly spiced Asian cuisine, sushi, poultry with citrus or thyme, veal, and vegetable-focused dishes such as asparagus or fennel. Creamy yet not overly rich sauces are lifted beautifully by the wine’s bright acidity and saline core. Serve cool, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F). In its youth, a brief decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open and release its flinty and citrus notes; as it gains bottle age, a gentler, shorter aeration is sufficient.

Schloss Lieser has become one of the star estates of the Mosel and of Germany as a whole, particularly since Thomas Haag took over in 1992. Son of the legendary Brauneberg winemaker Wilhelm Haag, Thomas has elevated Schloss Lieser into what many critics describe as a true “Champions League” domain.
