Description

2020 VIK from Viña Vik Winery is the flagship red from one of Chile’s most visionary estates, crafted to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the great Cabernet-based wines of Napa and Bordeaux. Sourced from the dramatic hillsides of Millahue Valley—“The Place of Gold”—this blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc captures the valley’s mosaic of microclimates in a wine of power, polish, and striking finesse. Long barrel aging, meticulous selection, and an almost obsessive focus on terroir expression have made VIK a modern icon in Chilean fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 VIK is deep, opaque ruby with violet highlights, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is highly aromatic and refined, opening with dark berries—blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe red plum—layered with dark chocolate, fresh-cracked walnut, violets, and graphite, alongside subtle floral lift and a cool, stony minerality. Hints of wild thyme, cedar, and fine cigar box emerge as the wine unfolds in the glass. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and tightly knit, with a linear, refreshing acidity that cuts through its generous, ripe fruit. The texture is particularly impressive: silk-smooth yet structured, with very fine, powdery tannins that frame flavors of ripe blackberry, red plum, cassis, and black cherry. Notes of cocoa, espresso, tobacco leaf, and dried herbs echo on a long, elegant finish, accented by that distinctive mineral edge from Cabernet Franc. Despite its depth and concentration, the wine never feels heavy or overly alcoholic; instead, it is poised, dynamic, and precise. Already beautiful from 2024 onward, it has the stuffing and balance to evolve gracefully for well over a decade, gaining complexity over 12–18 years in a good cellar.

Production
The 2020 VIK is born in the Millahue Valley in Chile’s interior, a site chosen after an extensive terroir search for its complex soils and varied exposures. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are planted at very high densities—around 7,500–10,000 vines per hectare—across a patchwork of limestone and sandy gravel, with slopes and aspects that create numerous microclimates. Warm afternoons are moderated by cool, often humid Pacific breezes and marked diurnal shifts, fostering slow, even ripening and excellent natural acidity. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand into small 10 kg crates, followed by rigorous hand-sorting on selection tables to ensure only pristine berries make it into the wine. Fermentations for each variety are conducted separately, with macerations of 16–35 days (depending on the grape) at 27–29°C and regular cap management and bâtonnage to refine tannin and texture. Malolactic fermentation is completed in barrel, and the wine then matures for not less than 26 months in French oak, crafted in-house under Viña Vik’s “Barroir” concept—barrels made from estate-grown oak and tailored toast profiles to reflect the property’s terroir. Only after extensive tasting and evaluation are the individual lots blended into the final VIK cuvée.

Food & Serving
2020 VIK is a natural partner for refined meat dishes and thoughtfully prepared cuisine. It shines alongside dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, roast lamb with herbs, venison or other game, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Decanting is strongly recommended: give the wine 2–3 hours in a decanter in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the floral, mineral, and herbal nuances to emerge fully. With more bottle age, a gentle 1-hour decant will be sufficient to remove sediment and open the bouquet.

Producer
Viña Vik Winery was founded in 2004 by Alex and Carrie Vik with a bold ambition: to create one of the world’s great wines from a single, exceptional terroir. After an exhaustive search, they chose Millahue Valley in Chile—literally “The Place of Gold”—for its dramatic topography, varied soils, and cooling coastal influence. The futuristic winery, completed in 2014 and designed by renowned Chilean architect Smiljan Radic, is a benchmark for sustainable, energy-efficient, and visually striking design, integrating water features, natural light, and gravity flow to minimize environmental impact. Under the guidance of consultant Patrick Valette (of Château Pavie) and head winemaker Cristián Vallejo, Viña Vik has quickly risen to international prominence, with its wines—including VIK, La Piu Belle, Milla Cala, and “A”—earning scores up to 99 points from critics such as James Suckling, as well as Master Medals, Platinum, and Gold from leading global competitions. Recognized by Wine Enthusiast as a Wine Star Award winner for ‘Best Winery Experience’ and ranked among the world’s most prestigious wineries, Viña Vik now stands firmly among Chile’s new generation of iconic estates.
