Description
The 2020 Villa Bucci Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Riserva is one of Italy’s benchmark white wines, coming from a producer long considered the reference point for Verdicchio. This organically farmed Riserva combines depth, precision and age‑worthiness in a style that is both understated and incredibly refined. Frequently named the best Italian white by Gambero Rosso, it showcases just how serious and complex Verdicchio can be when treated with the utmost care.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a stony, luminous yellow that will deepen towards a richer golden hue with a few years of bottle age. The nose starts out quite restrained and pure, then slowly opens to layers of white orchard fruit, ripe yellow plum, delicate blossom, fennel, tarragon, hints of spice from oak and a firmly etched, salty minerality.
On the palate, the 2020 Riserva is silky and fluid on entry, with a mouth‑filling juiciness that never feels heavy. Intense mineral drive runs through the core of the wine, joined by subtle herbal notes and a finely judged, classic Verdicchio bitterness that adds grip and complexity on the finish. The acidity is gentle rather than sharp, balanced by concentration and extract, allowing the alcohol to integrate effortlessly. The finish is very long, layered and complex. This is a Verdicchio built to age beautifully for well over a decade in the right cellar, gaining honeyed, nutty nuances and further depth with time.
Production
Sourced from Villa Bucci’s historic estate vineyards around Montecarotto in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi hills in Marche, this Verdicchio Riserva is deeply tied to its terroir of calcareous, clay‑rich soils and breezes from the Adriatic Sea. The estate works organically with low yields to concentrate flavour, harvesting Verdicchio grapes by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and structure. In the cellar, the must is gently vinified to protect the variety’s subtle aromatics, with extended maturation (traditionally in large, neutral wood and on fine lees) to build texture, complexity and the capacity to age, while keeping oak influence refined and well integrated.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines alongside refined cuisine: think grilled or roasted seafood, scallops, turbot, monkfish, or simply prepared white fish with fennel and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with poultry, veal in light sauces, vegetable risotti, truffle dishes and aged or semi‑hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and aromatics, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass to reveal its full complexity. For young vintages like 2020, a brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served with more structured dishes.
Producer
Villa Bucci, located near Montecarotto in Marche, is widely regarded as one of the great names of Italian white wine and the undisputed standard‑bearer for Verdicchio from Castelli di Jesi. The estate has long championed low yields, organic practices and a traditional, unhurried approach in the cellar, proving that Verdicchio can produce profound, long‑lived wines on par with the world’s best whites. Villa Bucci’s Verdicchio Riserva is the only wine to have earned Gambero Rosso’s top rating for ten consecutive years, and the estate regularly garners high scores from leading international critics, cementing its reputation as a reference producer in the region and beyond.
