Description
Vietti’s 2020 Barolo Ravera is a compelling expression of one of Barolo’s most respected crus, combining precision, depth, and the classic power of Nebbiolo with the site-driven elegance Ravera is known for. From a producer long celebrated for elevating single-vineyard Barolo, this wine reflects both heritage and meticulous craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep garnet hue typical of youthful Barolo, with subtle brick-tinged reflections beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose is layered and refined, opening with rose petal, red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried herbs, followed by notes of spice, licorice, graphite, and earthy truffle complexity.
On the palate, the wine is structured and focused, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and impressive length. The fruit is vivid yet tightly coiled, promising further development with time in bottle. While approachable with patience, this is a Barolo built for aging and should gain additional nuance and harmony over the next decade or more.
Production
Sourced from the Ravera cru in Novello, one of Barolo’s most prized vineyard sites, this wine benefits from a terroir known for altitude, well-exposed slopes, and calcareous marl soils that help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with careful extraction to preserve Nebbiolo’s perfume and structure, followed by maturation in oak to refine the tannins and integrate the wine’s powerful mineral backbone.
Food & Serving
An excellent match for rich Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef, veal shank, truffle risotto, mushroom pasta, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening in its youth to allow the aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Vietti is one of Barolo’s most esteemed producers, with a history rooted in the late 19th century and a longstanding reputation for crafting some of the region’s most characterful wines. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the estate is widely recognized for its pioneering focus on single-vineyard bottlings and its consistent quality across vintages, earning significant acclaim both in Italy and internationally.
