Description
The 2020 Tua Rita Redigaffi Magnum is one of Tuscany’s modern icons, a pure Merlot that regularly ranks among Italy’s most sought‑after reds. In this generous magnum format, the wine’s depth, complexity and aging potential are amplified, making it ideal for the cellar or the centre of a special occasion. Born on the coastal hills around Suvereto, Redigaffi captures the opulence of ripe Mediterranean fruit with the finesse and polish of top‑tier, artisanal winemaking. What sets Redigaffi apart is its combination of sheer power and velvety, almost hedonistic texture, married to remarkable precision and length. It’s the flagship wine of Tua Rita, the estate that helped redefine Tuscan Merlot and put Suvereto on the world map when critics, including Robert Parker, started awarding it perfect 100‑point scores. From a humble 2‑hectare vineyard acquired in 1984, Tua Rita has grown into a 30‑hectare benchmark estate, and Redigaffi is its most celebrated expression.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Redigaffi shows an opaque, inky ruby core with a deep purple rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The color clings to the sides of the glass, giving an early hint of the wine’s richness.
The nose is intense and layered, with brooding aromas of black plum, blackberry and dark cherry wrapped around notes of dried apricot, violets and sweet spice. As it opens, more complex nuances emerge: cocoa, espresso, leather, tobacco leaf and a distinct hint of warm embers or woodsmoke, echoing the “bålaske” character described at the estate. Subtle tones of vanilla, cedar and baking spice from fine oak are seamlessly integrated rather than dominant.
On the palate, Redigaffi 2020 is full‑bodied, plush and enveloping, yet remarkably polished. The Merlot fruit is dense and mouth‑coating, showing layers of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry compote alongside savory notes of graphite, licorice and Mediterranean herbs. The tannins are abundant but ultra‑fine and velvety, giving the wine a silky, accessible feel even in its youth. Acidity is vibrant enough to keep the richness in balance, and the finish is long, warm and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a faint, smoky-mineral echo.
In magnum format, the 2020 has excellent aging potential. You can enjoy it now after proper aeration for its generous, open-knit fruit, but it will continue to evolve beautifully for 15–20 years or more, gaining further complexity in the form of truffle, leather, forest floor and fine cigar box notes.
Production
Tua Rita’s vineyards lie near Suvereto on the Tuscan coast, in the province of Livorno, where a warm Mediterranean climate meets cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The terroir is a key to Redigaffi’s character: mixed soils rich in clay, pebbles and mineral components (including iron and other trace elements) give both power and a distinctly deep, savory-mineral edge to the Merlot. Yields are kept low to concentrate flavor, and the grapes for Redigaffi are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification is carried out with great care: fermentation usually takes place in temperature‑controlled tanks, with gentle extraction to achieve depth without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in small French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for an extended period, allowing the tannins to refine and the complex bouquet to develop before bottling. The magnums are then further rested in the cellar prior to release to ensure harmony and integration.
Food & Serving
This is a bold, luxurious Tuscan Merlot that shines alongside equally flavorful dishes. Think dry‑aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑braised beef short ribs, lamb shanks with rosemary and garlic, or rich stews and game such as venison or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, porcini mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve the 2020 Redigaffi Magnum at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the alcohol and richness in balance. Decanting is strongly recommended: give it at least 1–2 hours in a large decanter if drinking in the next few years, and even longer as it matures. In magnum, the wine will reward extended aeration, gradually revealing more nuance and aromatic detail over the course of an evening.
Producer
Tua Rita was founded in 1984 when Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio purchased a small property with just two hectares of vines in Suvereto, Tuscany. What began as a modest family project quickly grew into one of Italy’s most admired boutique estates, thanks to their meticulous vineyard work and unwavering focus on quality. Over the years, they expanded to around 30 hectares of vineyards, and their wines—especially Redigaffi—have played a major role in establishing Suvereto as a serious fine‑wine appellation within coastal Tuscany. After Virgilio’s passing in 2010, their daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla took over day‑to‑day management, maintaining the same exacting standards that built the estate’s reputation. Tua Rita’s Redigaffi has achieved cult status worldwide, garnering multiple top ratings, including 100‑point scores from leading critics, and securing the estate’s place among the elite producers not only of Tuscany, but of the entire wine world.
