Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Redigaffi shows a dense, almost opaque ruby-purple core with a vivid garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is deep and layered: ripe black plum, blackberry compote and macerated cherries unfold alongside notes of cocoa, espresso, sweet tobacco and pencil shavings, with subtle floral tones of violets and a touch of Mediterranean scrub and graphite. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Merlot with a velvety, almost creamy mouthfeel supported by finely polished tannins. Dark fruit is front and center—black cherry, blueberry and plum—wrapped in nuances of licorice, leather, cedar, warm spices and a faint balsamic edge. Despite its power, the wine maintains excellent balance thanks to fresh acidity and a long, precise finish marked by dark chocolate, savory herbs and a hint of smoke. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest a long life ahead; under proper cellar conditions, the 2020 vintage should evolve beautifully for 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, cigar box and dried fruit.

Production
Redigaffi is sourced from Tua Rita’s meticulously farmed estate vineyards in Suvereto, on Tuscany’s coastal belt, where warm days, cooling sea breezes and mineral-rich soils create an ideal environment for Merlot. The combination of clay, gravel and iron-laced soils yields small, concentrated berries and naturally low yields. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters reach the cellar. After careful sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for a slow, even extraction of color, aroma and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques—predominantly new or second-fill—where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and rests on its lees, gaining depth, texture and aromatic complexity before being bottled unhurriedly and released only when Tua Rita judges it ready.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Merlot shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, bistecca alla Fiorentina, venison with roasted root vegetables or beef short ribs in red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, porcini tagliatelle, aged Pecorino Toscano and hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to let the aromas fully open. Decanting is strongly recommended—give the 2020 Redigaffi at least 1–2 hours in a decanter when young to soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic spectrum; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove sediment.

Tua Rita was born in 1984 when Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio purchased a small property in Suvereto with just two hectares of vines, intending little more than a hands-on country lifestyle. Their meticulous vineyard work and uncompromising standards quickly transformed the estate into one of Tuscany’s most talked-about producers, and over time the holdings expanded to around 30 hectares. The breakthrough came when Redigaffi, their flagship Merlot, achieved cult status and an historic 100-point score from Robert Parker, propelling Tua Rita onto the world stage. Today, under the stewardship of their daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla, the estate continues to rank among the elite names of coastal Tuscany, known for crafting intensely expressive, terroir-driven wines that seamlessly marry power, elegance and longevity.
