Description
The 2020 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri is a polished, Tuscan interpretation of a classic Bordeaux blend, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown near the coast in Suvereto. This is one of Tua Rita’s flagship reds, known for its combination of ripe, dark fruit and finely etched structure. Born from a near-perfect vintage in Tuscany, the 2020 offers power, depth and elegance in equal measure, in a style that has helped secure the estate’s cult status among collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Giusto di Notri shows a deep, opaque ruby core with a narrow garnet rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose opens with a generous wave of dark fruits—blackberries, blackcurrants and black plums—interwoven with notes of graphite, cedar, crushed violets and a subtle balsamic lift. As it unfolds, more complex nuances appear: hints of licorice, cigar box, dark chocolate, tar and a whisper of woodsmoke or campfire ash.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and layered, with a velvety yet firmly structured texture. Ripe black fruits dominate the entry, followed by savory tones of tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, roasted coffee and spice. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and length; Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic complexity and a touch of leafy freshness; Merlot rounds out the mid-palate with plush, supple fruit. Tannins are fine-grained but assertive, promising excellent development in the bottle, while vibrant acidity keeps the wine precise and energetic through a long, mineral-tinged finish. This vintage is already impressive in its youth but will reward patience, with an aging potential of 10–20 years from vintage, gaining even more nuance and harmony over time.
Production
Giusto di Notri is sourced from Tua Rita’s estate vineyards in Suvereto, in the coastal Maremma area of Tuscany, where a warm Mediterranean climate is moderated by sea breezes and cooled by nighttime temperature drops. The soils here are a complex mix of clay, sand and mineral-rich components, offering both drainage and depth, which suits Bordeaux varieties particularly well. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse: the must is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, with careful pump-overs to build structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new), where it gains additional complexity, integration of tannins and its hallmark notes of spice, cedar and toast before being bottled.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding yet refined red that pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes. Think grilled or roasted red meats (especially bistecca alla fiorentina), slow-braised lamb shanks, game birds, osso buco, or beef short ribs. It also works well with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and with dishes featuring porcini mushrooms, truffles or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or gentle splash in a carafe is sufficient to bring out its layered aromatics.
Producer
Tua Rita was founded in 1984 when Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio purchased a small property with just two hectares of vines in Suvereto, Tuscany. What began as a modest family project quickly evolved into one of Italy’s most respected boutique estates, as meticulous vineyard work and low yields produced wines of remarkable intensity and character. Over the years, the estate has expanded to around 30 hectares, and under the stewardship of their daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla, Tua Rita has cemented its reputation on the world stage. Known especially for their powerful yet refined reds from international varieties—most famously Redigaffi and Giusto di Notri—the estate has played a key role in putting Suvereto and the broader coastal Maremma on the map as a source of top-tier Tuscan wines, with consistently high critical acclaim and strong demand from collectors worldwide.
