Description

The 2020 Teso la Monja Victorino Magnum is a powerful, single-varietal Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) from some of Toro’s most coveted old vineyards. Bottled in an impressive 1.5L format, it showcases the depth, intensity and longevity that have made both the region and the Eguren family famous among Spanish wine lovers. This is a wine crafted for serious collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate concentrated, age-worthy reds from authentic, pre-phylloxera terroir. Sourced from low-yielding, bush-trained vines of 45 years and older, Victorino is a benchmark for modern Toro: opulent yet finely polished, with a strong sense of place. The sandy, phylloxera-resistant soils of Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena preserve original, ungrafted vines – a rare historical treasure in Europe – and give the wine its striking combination of black fruit power, mineral backbone and aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Victorino Magnum is deeply opaque, almost inky purple with a dense, garnet rim that hints at its concentration and structure. The visual impression alone signals a full-bodied, richly extracted red with serious presence. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums are framed by notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, licorice and sweet baking spices from its time in French oak. Subtle mineral tones, hints of graphite, toasted coffee bean and a touch of smoked herbs add further complexity as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, Victorino is full-bodied and powerful yet remarkably smooth, with a velvety texture that wraps around its ripe, abundant tannins. Flavors of dark, perfectly ripe black fruit are joined by cacao, clove, black pepper and roasted notes, all carried by a firm mineral spine and vibrant, well-integrated acidity. The finish is impressively long, persistent and harmonious, with lingering spice, cocoa and dark fruit that unfold in layers. In magnum format, the aging potential is excellent. Properly cellared, this 2020 Victorino should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years or more, gaining greater complexity, tertiary nuances (leather, tobacco, truffle) and even silkier tannins while retaining its core of dark fruit.

Production
The vineyards for Victorino are located in the heart of DO Toro, across carefully selected parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena, at elevations of roughly 650–800 meters above sea level. Here, predominantly sandy soils—often mixed with gravel and a bit of clay—play a crucial role: they prevented the spread of phylloxera, allowing many vines to remain ungrafted and preserving original, authentic Tinta de Toro plant material. The climate is continental with extreme temperature differences between day and night, which concentrates flavor while maintaining freshness. All grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and collected in small boxes to prevent damage and preserve berry integrity. Yields are kept very low, around 15 hl/ha, ensuring remarkable concentration in the final wine. Following careful selection, the 100% Tinta de Toro grapes from vines 45 years and older undergo meticulous vinification, with temperature-controlled fermentation and gentle extractions to balance power and finesse. The wine is then aged for about 15 months in French oak barrels, which adds structure, aromatic complexity and subtle toasted notes without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Victorino Magnum calls for equally bold, flavorful dishes. It is superb with grilled or roasted red meats (ribeye, lamb racks, venison), slow-braised beef cheeks, oxtail or short ribs, as well as richly spiced stews and game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Manchego curado, Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Comté, and with dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression, slightly cooler than room temperature to keep the freshness and definition of the wine. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended, especially from magnum, to allow the tannins to soften and the full aromatic spectrum—dark fruit, spice, mineral and toasted notes—to emerge.

Producer
Teso La Monja is the flagship Toro estate of the renowned Eguren family, one of Spain’s most respected wine dynasties, long admired for their role in elevating Tempranillo-based wines both in Rioja and Toro. After selling their celebrated projects Numanthia and Termanthia to Moët & Chandon, the Egurens returned to Toro with renewed focus and ambition, founding Teso La Monja to further explore the potential of old-vine Tinta de Toro. With outstanding parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena—many on sandy, phylloxera-resistant soils and planted with vines ranging from 15–60 years to well over 60–100 years of age—Teso La Monja has quickly become a reference point in the region. Their wines, including Victorino, are widely recognized for combining the raw power and intensity of Toro with precision, elegance and a clear expression of terroir, earning high praise from critics and cementing the estate’s status as one of the leading producers in DO Toro.
