Description
The 2020 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Magnum is a benchmark Super Tuscan in an especially collectible format. From one of Italy’s most celebrated estates, this 1.5L bottle offers the hallmark elegance, depth, and longevity that have made Sassicaia a modern icon. The magnum format not only impresses visually at the table, it also allows the wine to evolve more slowly and harmoniously over time, enhancing its aging potential. First released commercially in the late 1960s, Sassicaia helped redefine Italian fine wine and put Bolgheri on the world map. The 2020 vintage continues this legacy, marrying classic Cabernet structure with the Mediterranean finesse of the Tuscan coast. Sourced from the historic Tenuta San Guido vineyards, this is a wine built for both serious collectors and lovers of impeccably crafted, age-worthy reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Sassicaia shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with subtle purple reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is beautifully layered and refined: blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and dark cherry interweave with crushed violets, Mediterranean herbs, cedar, and graphite. With air, more complex nuances emerge—hints of tobacco leaf, licorice, and a faint mineral smokiness that speaks to its gravelly soils.
On the palate, the wine is poised and finely structured, with a silky yet firmly framed texture. Ripe cassis and black plum are supported by notes of blackcurrant leaf, subtle spice, and a savory, almost balsamic undertone. The tannins are ultra-fine but persistent, giving a long, tapering finish marked by freshness, saline minerality, and discreet oak integration. While already inviting with proper aeration, this 2020 Sassicaia in magnum is built for the long haul, with an aging window easily stretching 20–25 years from vintage, and likely longer in this larger format as it develops additional complexity and tertiary notes.
Production
Sassicaia is sourced from Tenuta San Guido’s hillside vineyards in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, where cool maritime breezes and significant diurnal shifts preserve acidity and aromatic lift. The estate’s famously stony, gravel-rich soils—“sassicaia” meaning “place of many stones”—resemble those of Bordeaux’s Left Bank and are ideal for Cabernet-based blends, providing excellent drainage and imparting a distinct mineral character. The 2020 cuvée is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller portion of Cabernet Franc, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. After careful selection, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration tailored to preserve elegance and fine-grained tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for around 24–25 months, followed by further refinement in bottle, allowing the components to knit together into the seamless, harmonious profile that Sassicaia is renowned for.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Sassicaia Magnum is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes that match its depth and structure. Think classic Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow-braised beef or veal, or game such as venison and wild boar. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy and savory nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. In magnum, this wine benefits from generous aeration: decant 2–3 hours before serving in its youth, reducing the decanting time as it gains bottle age, to allow the bouquet to fully unfold without losing delicacy.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido, located in Bolgheri along the Tuscan coast, is one of Italy’s most influential and revered wine estates. Founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the property became world-famous when Sassicaia—originally a private family wine—was released commercially and went on to challenge and often outshine top Bordeaux in international tastings. This success effectively launched the Super Tuscan category and transformed Bolgheri from an overlooked coastal zone into one of Italy’s most prestigious appellations. Today, Tenuta San Guido remains a benchmark for quality and consistency, with Sassicaia regularly earning top scores and critical acclaim, and holding a coveted position among the world’s most collectible and age-worthy wines.
