Description
The 2020 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia is a poised and beautifully aromatic expression of one of Italy’s most iconic wines. In a vintage marked by an unusual but ultimately benevolent growing season, Sassicaia 2020 marries depth and concentration with remarkable freshness and finesse. This is a classic Cabernet-based Bolgheri that is already charming in youth, yet clearly built for the long haul. Blending 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 highlights the unique gravelly, limestone-rich terroirs that first put Sassicaia on the map as the original “Super Tuscan.” Since its debut in the late 1960s, Sassicaia has been a benchmark for Bordeaux-style blends in Tuscany, and the 2020 vintage continues this legacy with a wine that feels both timeless and vibrantly modern.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Sassicaia shows a deep, intense ruby color with youthful violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and energy. The nose is immediately expressive and perfumed: notes of dark berries and blackcurrant mingle with forest floor, wild herbs, and hints of black tea. Subtle balsamic tones and delicate spice from oak aging weave in underneath, adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is refined yet powerful, with a core of dark cherry, cassis, and plum framed by notes of graphite, cedar, and savory Mediterranean herbs. The tannins are fine-grained and silky, giving a velvety texture that carries the flavors across the palate. A bright line of acidity brings lift and precision, keeping the wine vibrant and energetic despite its concentration. The finish is long and layered, with lingering notes of spice, black tea, and a gentle balsamic echo.
While already highly attractive and approachable in its youth, the 2020 Sassicaia has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully. It will begin to truly show its full complexity after 3–4 years in bottle and can easily develop over 15–20 years or more in a good cellar, gaining tertiary notes of tobacco, leather, dried flowers, and truffle.
Production
The grapes for Sassicaia 2020 come from estate vineyards in Bolgheri planted between 100 and 400 meters above sea level, with a west to south-west exposure that benefits from sea breezes and excellent sunlight. The soils are famously varied and complex, with a strong presence of limestone, marl, and abundant pebbles and gravel, along with portions of clay—conditions that favor Cabernet of great aromatic intensity and structural elegance. Harvesting is carried out by hand, beginning in early September with the younger plots and Cabernet Franc, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon from the lower-lying vineyards, and finishing with the higher altitude parcels toward the end of the month. In the cellar, bunches are carefully sorted on a selection table before gentle destemming and pressing to preserve berry integrity and avoid excessive tannin extraction. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled tanks at up to 27–28 °C, with regular pump-overs and délestage to achieve fine aromatic extraction and maintain freshness. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel before the wine is transferred to French oak barriques, around 45% new, 45% first fill, and 10% second fill, for over 25 months of maturation. After aging, the lots are blended, settled in tank, and then bottled, with additional bottle aging before release.
Food & Serving
Sassicaia 2020 is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes based on red meat and game. Think grilled or roasted lamb with herbs, bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, venison, or wild boar ragù. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, and with mushroom-based dishes or truffle-infused recipes that echo its earthy and balsamic notes. Serve at 16–18 °C for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromas to unfurl and to soften the tannins; as the wine ages, a shorter decant—mainly to remove any sediment—will be sufficient.
Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s most revered estates and the birthplace of Sassicaia, the wine that effectively created the Super Tuscan category. Located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, the estate was developed by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon on these gravelly slopes in the mid-20th century, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. At a time when Tuscany was almost exclusively focused on Sangiovese, Sassicaia’s success redefined what Italian wine could be and helped put Bolgheri on the world wine map. Today, Tenuta San Guido is a benchmark for precision, terroir expression, and age-worthy Cabernet-based blends, with Sassicaia consistently regarded as one of the world’s great collectible wines.
