Description
2020 Telmo Rodriguez Lanzaga BIO is the flagship wine of Telmo Rodríguez’s Rioja project, capturing the purest expression of the village of Lanciego. Sourced exclusively from his own certified organic vineyards and crafted with meticulous attention to detail, it marries traditional Rioja sensibilities with a modern precision and clarity. This is a serious yet refined red that speaks eloquently of place and has already earned high acclaim, including a 95/100 score.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lanzaga 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red colour with high intensity and a youthful rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is generous yet poised: ripe black fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant and dark cherry) is layered with subtle spice, graphite, liquorice, dried herbs and finely integrated notes of new French oak—vanilla, cocoa and a touch of toasted cedar. There’s a lifted floral edge and a sense of coolness that reflects its higher-altitude origins.
On the palate, the wine is creamy in texture yet wonderfully balanced, with a core of succulent dark fruit framed by fine-grained, ripe tannins. Flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and wild plum are wrapped in warm spice, gentle balsamic notes and a discreet touch of smoke and sweet oak. The acidity is fresh and well-judged, keeping the richness in check and lending the wine real vitality. The finish is long and savoury, with lingering fruit, spice and mineral notes. Drinking beautifully now with a short decant, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, developing further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Lanzaga is drawn from old, organically farmed bush vines planted on terraced vineyards around the high-altitude village of Lanciego in Rioja, an area influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. The poor, well-drained soils and wide vine spacing encourage deep root systems and naturally low yields, concentrating flavour and complexity in the grapes. The fruit is harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyards to retain only the best bunches. Traditional red vinification with an extended maceration is employed, with frequent pump-overs to extract colour, tannin and aromatic depth. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats, which preserve purity of fruit and a sense of place, before the wine is matured for around 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels and larger foudres of various sizes and origins. Telmo Rodríguez believes that Tempranillo remains fresher in new oak, and here the barrel work is expertly judged, adding texture and complexity without overshadowing the vineyard character.
Food & Serving
This refined Rioja pairs beautifully with deeply flavoured dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, grilled or braised beef, Iberico pork, game birds, and slow-cooked stews like lamb shank or ossobuco. It also works well with mushroom-based dishes, roasted root vegetables, aged Manchego and other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains a few years in bottle, a gentle 30-minute decant is sufficient to fully reveal its elegance and depth.
Producer
Telmo Rodríguez is one of Spain’s most respected and influential winemakers, often credited with helping to redefine modern Spanish wine while staying rooted in tradition. After studying in Bordeaux and working in the Rhône with the legendary Auguste Clape, he returned to Spain and initially made wine at his family’s estate, Remelluri, before striking out to create his own projects across multiple regions. From his base in Madrid, he works with historic vineyards and native grape varieties, championing old bush vines planted on exceptional sites and farmed without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. In Rioja, the Lanzaga project in Lanciego is the spiritual core of his work, showcasing the village’s unique terroir through organic viticulture, low yields and sensitive, terroir-driven winemaking. International critics have consistently ranked him among Spain’s top producers, and his wines are regularly featured on the world stage for their authenticity, finesse and ageworthiness.
