Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with excellent concentration at the core and a gently translucent rim. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with pure blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, followed by notes of hazelnut, cocoa, and dark chocolate. Subtle hints of fresh mint, sage, and bay leaf add an aromatic lift, while delicate tones of cedar, graphite, and a touch of baking spice reflect well-judged oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with a supple, velvety texture and beautifully integrated tannins. Spottswoode’s Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon is rooted in the cool western edge of St. Helena in Napa Valley, where the estate vineyard sits on the alluvial clay and gravel fans of Sulphur Creek. These well-drained soils, combined with moderating marine breezes funneled between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas Range, allow for slow, even ripening and excellent natural balance. Grapes are harvested by hand in small lots at optimal physiological maturity, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used—especially critical in challenging fire years. Vinification typically involves a gentle destemming, fermentation in stainless steel or temperature-controlled tanks with careful cap management to extract color and fine tannins, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The final blend is crafted from the Spottswoode Estate and select, sustainably farmed family vineyards across Napa to achieve the signature Lyndenhurst profile of freshness, elegance, and layered aromatics.
