Description

The 2020 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon is a benchmark Napa Valley classic from one of St. Helena’s most revered estates. Grown on Spottswoode’s organically farmed estate vineyard on the western edge of town, this wine combines richness and power with remarkable finesse and purity. In a vintage marked by wildfires across California, Spottswoode’s swift and meticulous harvest decisions ensured a pristine, smoke‑free wine that has already earned near-perfect critical acclaim.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep garnet to midnight purple hue, hinting at its concentration and depth. The nose is beautifully layered and expressive, with violets, lavender and potpourri lifted over a core of blackcurrant (cassis), black cherry and ripe plum. Subtle notes of cedar, cigar box and cinnamon toast mingle with dark chocolate, mocha and a touch of eucalypt and graphite, adding both warmth and precision. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a seamless, velvety texture and finely structured, powdery tannins. Flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry are woven with hints of black raspberry, black tea, stony mineral notes and well-integrated oak spice. There is plenty of energy and freshness from the lively acidity, keeping the wine vibrant rather than heavy, while the finish is long, refined and gently dusty with a mulled-earth, claylike nuance. Already impressive in its youth, this Cabernet Sauvignon has the concentration, balance and structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
Spottswoode Estate lies on the western edge of St. Helena in Napa Valley, where alluvial clay-loam soils from the Sulphur Creek series provide excellent drainage and a natural framework for deeply structured Cabernet. Cooled by marine breezes funneled between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas range, the vineyard benefits from warm, sunny days and cooler nights that allow for even, unhurried ripening. The 42-acre estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness, with strict selection to avoid any fruit affected by smoke in this challenging vintage. The 2020 blend is based primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, fermented in temperature-controlled vessels and then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to polish the tannins and add complexity while preserving the wine’s signature purity and balance.

Food & Serving
This is a refined yet powerful Napa Cabernet that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Serve it with dry-aged ribeye, lamb chops with rosemary, braised short ribs, or venison with a red wine reduction; it also pairs beautifully with duck breast, wild mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. For the best experience, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). If drinking young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully open; as the wine ages, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be sufficient to remove sediment and let the bouquet unfold.

Producer
Originally established in 1882, Spottswoode is one of Napa Valley’s historic estates and a reference point for classically styled, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. The Novak family acquired the property in 1972, and under the guidance of second-generation sisters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, Spottswoode has become a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture in St. Helena. Known for its elegance, consistency and terroir-driven character, the estate has garnered numerous top scores and critical accolades over the decades. Spottswoode’s Cabernet Sauvignon is widely regarded as one of Napa’s great wines, reflecting both the heritage of the region and a steadfast commitment to meticulous, environmentally conscious winemaking.
