Description
2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is one of the benchmark dry whites of Bordeaux, crafted by a Grand Cru Classé estate that treats white wine with the same seriousness as its reds. This is a structured, deeply textural Pessac-Léognan that combines ripe fruit richness with incisive freshness and a distinctly mineral spine. The inclusion of a touch of Sauvignon Gris in the blend, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, gives the wine extra dry extract and complexity, making it both immediately seductive and built to age. With roots that trace back over 800 years, Smith Haut Lafitte has long been a reference point in Graves, and the 2020 vintage continues that legacy in a particularly polished, modern form.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is bright and luminous, typically showing a pale straw to light gold hue with green reflections that hint at its vibrancy and youth. The nose is expressive and layered: aromas of gooseberry, ripe nectarine and citrus zest intermingle with notes of lemongrass, fresh mint and subtle florals. Underneath the fruit lie gourmand accents of pastry cream, almond paste and a whisper of toast and smoke from élevage in fine-grained oak.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, satin-textured white Bordeaux, with a striking combination of generosity and tension. The attack is pure and crystalline, flowing into a fleshier, densely packed mid-palate wrapped around a firm, finely tuned core of acidity. Flavors echo the nose—stone fruit, citrus, and herbal lift—enriched by nutty, creamy nuances and a gentle, smoky minerality. The finish is long, precise and salty, with a mouthwatering, almost chalky grip that invites another sip. Thanks to its concentration, structure and careful oak integration, the 2020 has excellent aging potential: while already impressive now, it should evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity, truffle and honeyed tones with time in bottle.
Production
Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc comes from prime terroirs in Pessac-Léognan, on classic Graves soils of deep gravel mixed with sand and clay, over a complex subsoil that naturally drains yet stresses the vines just enough to produce intensely flavored grapes. The blend is dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, supported by Sémillon and a small but important portion of Sauvignon Gris, which contributes extra texture and dry extract. The estate practices sustainable, organic-leaning viticulture with a strong focus on biodiversity; harvesting is done by hand in small batches, with multiple passes to ensure each parcel is picked at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, grapes are gently pressed and the must is clarified before fermentation, which typically takes place in temperature-controlled barrels and vats, often with a proportion of new French oak. Lees stirring (bâtonnage) and extended élevage in barrel add depth, creaminess and complexity, while careful use of oak preserves the wine’s precision, freshness and signature smoky-mineral character.
Food & Serving
This structured yet refined white Bordeaux is an excellent partner for elevated seafood and richly flavored dishes. Think grilled or butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, langoustines, or oysters with a citrus–herb mignonette. It also shines alongside roasted poultry, guinea fowl, veal in cream sauces, risotto with seasonal vegetables, white asparagus, or dishes featuring fine herbs and lemon. Mature, nutty cheeses such as aged Comté or Gruyère can be superb companions as the wine gains complexity with age. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and aromatic expression. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served with richer cuisine; older bottles should be handled delicately and decanted only briefly, if at all, to preserve their more fragile tertiary aromas.
Producer
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a historic Grand Cru Classé estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, with viticultural origins going back more than eight centuries. Vines were first planted on the gravel plateau of Lafitte in 1365 by the Du Bosq family, and the property took its current name after it was acquired in 1720 by George Smith, who recognized the potential of these exceptional gravelly soils. Today, under the ownership of Daniel and Florence Cathiard (since 1990), Smith Haut Lafitte has become one of the most admired and quality-driven châteaux on the Left Bank, distinguished by its ability to produce equally compelling red and white wines. The Cathiards halted mechanical harvesting in favor of hand-picking, built their own cooperage to craft the majority of their barrels in-house, and pioneered sustainable, environmentally focused practices that earned them the Robert Parker Green Emblem in 2020. Combining deep respect for tradition with cutting-edge tools such as Oenoview satellite imaging and optical sorting, and working with renowned consultants like Michel Rolland and Stéphane Derenoncourt, the estate consistently delivers wines that are both quintessentially Bordeaux and unmistakably Smith Haut Lafitte: complex, elegant, and built for the cellar.
