Description
Named after the weathered barn with its iconic rusty roof on Angaston Road, the 2020 Redheads Studio Rusty Roof Riesling captures the soul of Barossa Valley in a focused, small-batch white. This is 100% Riesling from the historic Possum Creek vineyards, first planted in 1978 by Murray and Lorraine Heidenreich, and produced in very limited quantities. Expect a vibrant, characterful wine that balances generous fruit with classic Riesling precision and length.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rusty Roof Riesling shines a pale straw to light lemon hue with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is lifted and expressive, with layers of lychee, melon, citrus zest and floral notes, wrapped around a clear, unmistakable Riesling profile.
On the palate, it is intensely fruity yet beautifully composed: juicy peach, apricot and nectarine are supported by bright, zesty citrus and a fine mineral thread. The texture is mouthfilling but never heavy, thanks to a lively, well-judged acidity that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, pure and aromatic, leaving lingering stone-fruit and citrus notes. Enjoyable now for its vibrant fruit, this vintage has the structure and acidity to develop added complexity over the next 5–8 years in bottle.
Production
The fruit for Rusty Roof Riesling comes from the Possum Creek vineyards in Barossa, a site established in 1978 and now fully mature, with deep-rooted vines drawing character from the region’s iron-rich soils and warm days tempered by cooler evenings. Grapes are typically picked in the cool of the early morning to preserve delicate aromatics, then carefully sorted before pressing. Fermentation is conducted at low temperatures in stainless-steel tanks to keep the Riesling profile clean and vibrant, with no heavy oak influence, allowing the vineyard character, fruit purity and racy acidity to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a versatile food partner, pairing beautifully with fresh seafood (think prawns, grilled fish and ceviche), sushi, lightly spiced Asian dishes, Thai salads, and aromatic curries. It also works well with goat’s cheese, summer salads and white meats with citrus or herb-based sauces. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass to open up its aromatics will enhance its complexity and length.
Producer
Redheads Studio began life in McLaren Vale as a creative, small-scale winemaking studio where independent winemakers could experiment with top-quality fruit from across South Australia. Over time, the project outgrew its original home and relocated to Barossa Valley, settling into the now-iconic site on Angaston Road, complete with the old barn and its distinctive rusty roof. Today, Redheads is known for its artisanal, low-volume bottlings that champion characterful vineyards and hands-on winemaking. Rusty Roof Riesling is one of the estate’s white wine jewels, reflecting both the heritage of the Possum Creek plantings and Redheads’ reputation for crafting bold, expressive wines that stand out in the Barossa landscape.
