The nose opens with pure blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum, followed by notes of graphite, cedar, and cocoa, with subtle hints of violet, dried herbs, and warm baking spices from well-integrated oak. On the palate, expect a full-bodied, structured wine with finely knit tannins and a core of dark fruit—cassis, boysenberry, and ripe blackberry—layered with tobacco leaf, espresso, and a touch of savory earth. Production
Quintessa is an estate wine sourced from a single, organically and biodynamically farmed property in Rutherford, on the eastern side of Napa Valley. The diverse terroir—ranging from gravelly, alluvial benchlands to volcanic hillsides—provides multiple exposures, soil types, and elevations, which are individually farmed and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and balance. Each block is vinified separately, typically in a combination of small stainless-steel and oak fermenters, allowing precision in extraction and temperature control. After fermentation, the lots are carefully assessed and blended to capture the full expression of the estate, then matured in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to add texture, complexity, and fine-grained structure while preserving the purity of fruit and the distinct Rutherford dust character.

Consider herb-crusted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, or roasted duck; for a more casual spread, aged hard cheeses, truffle-inflected dishes, and wild mushroom risotto also complement the wine’s depth and earthy nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for best expression of aromatics and balance. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet, while well-cellared, mature examples can be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment.
