Description
Bottled in an exceptionally rare 5-liter jeroboam, the 2020 Paganos La Nieta is the flagship wine of the Eguren family and one of the true icons of Rioja Alavesa. Sourced from a tiny 1.75-hectare single vineyard planted in 1975, this is a limited-production, cellar-worthy red that marries power, elegance, and terroir transparency. With only around 5,000 bottles produced in total and just a handful in this impressive large format, it is a collector’s piece as much as it is a world-class wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Nieta shows a deep, vivid ruby to garnet core with a youthful sheen, hinting at its concentration and longevity. The nose is refined and layered rather than showy, with subtle yet complex aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plums interwoven with violet, graphite, and a pronounced mineral undertone from its limestone clay soils. Nuances of fine French oak—cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of vanilla and toasted hazelnut—sit beautifully in the background.
On the palate, this is both powerful and supremely elegant, a balance that is difficult to achieve and very much a hallmark of La Nieta. The texture is silky but firm, with medium to full body, precise acidity, and finely polished tannins that give a long, mineral-driven finish. Dark fruit, licorice, and subtle spice unfold gradually, supported by a fresh, stony backbone that keeps the wine lifted and vibrant. In jeroboam format, its aging potential is extended significantly: while already enjoyable with a substantial meal, it will reward patience over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, harmony, and tertiary notes with time in the cellar.
Production
La Nieta comes from a single 1.75-hectare vineyard in Páganos, near Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, planted in 1975 at an elevation of around 525 meters. The soils are very calcareous clay, a classic, high-quality terroir that imparts marked minerality and finesse to the wine. The grapes—primarily Tempranillo—are hand-harvested in small boxes to preserve fruit integrity and carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation takes place in four 1,000-liter oak vats, allowing for fine-tuned extraction and gentle integration of tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 16 months in new French oak barriques, where it develops its signature balance of structure, elegance, and aromatic depth before being bottled, with this 5-liter jeroboam presented in an original wooden case.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Rioja best matched with rich, flavorful dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, lamb chops, slow-braised beef cheeks, game birds, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. It also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses such as Manchego or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and freshness. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended—especially from the large-format bottle—to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered aromatics and refined structure.
Producer
La Nieta is crafted by the Eguren family under the Paganos label, a dynasty with winemaking roots in Rioja that stretch back to 1870. Over generations, the Egurens have become synonymous with some of Spain’s most acclaimed wines, including Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente and the former cult estate Numanthia-Termes, which they built up before selling to LVMH. La Nieta, meaning “the granddaughter,” is a deeply personal project created after the birth of a family grandchild and conceived as the purest expression of a single, exceptional vineyard in Rioja Alavesa. Regularly singled out by leading critics—Robert Parker has called La Nieta the “star” of the range—it stands firmly among the very top wines of Spain, cementing the Eguren family’s reputation as one of the country’s benchmark producers.
