Description
The 2020 Morlet Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Cœur de Vallée captures the very essence of Oakville, Napa Valley’s most coveted heartland for world‑class Cabernet. Sourced from a single, pedigreed vineyard threaded by To Kalon Creek and framed by views of Mount Saint John, this is a deeply expressive, terroir-driven wine crafted with a distinctly French sensibility. With tiny production (around 1,500 bottles) and distribution via the prestigious Place de Bordeaux, it is one of Napa’s most sought-after modern classics.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cœur de Vallée is intensely saturated, showing a deep, opaque ruby-purple core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is exuberant yet refined, opening with layers of crushed strawberries, cassis, blackberry and black cherry, then unfolding into fig leaf, mocha, cedar cigar box and dark bittersweet chocolate. Complex floral and herbal nuances—dried lavender, potpourri and a whisper of tobacco leaf—add aromatic lift and intrigue.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and poised. A generous wave of ripe red and black fruits coats the mouth, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the richness in perfect check. Round, polished tannins frame flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry liqueur, Kahlúa-like coffee liqueur, cocoa and subtle spice, leading into a long, layered finish with notes of cedar, dried flowers and dark chocolate. Already impressive in its youth, the 2020 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–20 years or more, developing greater complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Cœur de Vallée is rooted in Oakville’s prime alluvial fan, where well-drained soils composed of 40–60% gravel, mixed with loam and sand, create an ideal environment for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard benefits from the warm Oakville climate moderated by cool evening breezes, while To Kalon Creek meanders through the estate, contributing to excellent drainage and a distinct microclimate. Morlet works with low yields and meticulous, hands-on vineyard care, with grapes harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and balance. In the cellar, traditional, minimally interventionist methods are employed: the blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc is fermented using classic techniques, then matured for 16 months in French oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered to retain texture, aromatic complexity and a true sense of place, and then allowed further quiet refinement in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Cabernet that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Think prime rib, dry-aged ribeye, lamb racks with rosemary and garlic, slow-braised short ribs or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. If enjoying in its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to allow the wine to fully unfurl its aromatics and soften the tannins; with bottle age, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will suffice.
