Description

The 2020 Montaribaldi Sarz Barolo is a poised and expressive red that captures the power and elegance of Barolo in a beautifully approachable style. Crafted from carefully selected Nebbiolo grapes, it balances structure, aromatics and depth in a way that will appeal both to seasoned Barolo collectors and curious explorers of Piemonte’s finest wines. This single-vineyard expression from Montaribaldi highlights the character of a specific Barolo hillside, offering a clear snapshot of place and vintage. What sets Sarz Barolo apart is its combination of classical Barolo tannic backbone with a particularly pure, lifted fruit profile and refined spice. The 2020 vintage brings generous aromatics and precision, underpinned by the traditional long maturation that Nebbiolo demands. Rooted in the centuries-old Barolo tradition of aging-worthy Nebbiolo, this wine continues Montaribaldi’s mission to express the nuances of their vineyards through meticulous viticulture and restrained, thoughtful winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Montaribaldi Sarz Barolo shows a luminous garnet hue, with the classic brick-orange reflections at the rim that hint at Nebbiolo’s naturally evolving color, even in its youth. It is clear and bright, with good viscosity that slowly coats the sides of the glass. The nose opens with perfumed notes of dried roses and violets, followed by red cherry, wild strawberry and subtle hints of blood orange. With air, more complex layers emerge: sweet spices such as cinnamon and anise, a touch of cedar, and savory notes of leather, tobacco leaf and dried herbs, all wrapped in a gentle mineral tension that recalls sun-warmed stones and earth. On the palate, this Barolo is medium to full-bodied with a firm, finely woven tannic structure—grippy enough to be classically Barolo, yet already showing finesse. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and pomegranate are supported by hints of licorice, potpourri and a subtle tarry undertone. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving the wine lift and length, while the finish lingers with red fruit, spice and a delicate, almost saline minerality. While approachable now with proper aeration, the 2020 Sarz Barolo has clear aging potential. Over the next 8–15 years, the tannins will soften, the fruit will turn more tertiary and savory, and the floral and truffle notes typical of mature Barolo are likely to become increasingly pronounced, rewarding patient cellaring.

Production
Montaribaldi sources the Nebbiolo for Sarz Barolo from hillside vineyards in the Barolo area of Piemonte, where calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils, combined with excellent drainage, give the wines both structure and aromatic finesse. The vineyards are planted on well-exposed slopes, benefiting from a mix of warm days and cool nights that enhance slow, even ripening and preserve acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it to the cellar, with careful selection carried out directly in the vineyard and again upon arrival. In the winery, the fruit is traditionally vinified: a gentle destemming and crushing is followed by a long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, after which the wine is aged in large oak casks and/or traditional barrels for an extended period, allowing the powerful Nebbiolo tannins to knit and the wine’s complex aromatics to evolve without being overshadowed by heavy new oak.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Montaribaldi Sarz Barolo is ideally suited to rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and acidity. Classic Piedmontese pairings include braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, slow-cooked lamb, and game such as venison or wild boar. It also shines alongside truffle dishes—tajarin pasta with white truffle, mushroom risotto, or roasted root vegetables with shaved truffle—and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano or mature Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as the wine matures in bottle, shorter aeration will be sufficient.
