Description
Montaribaldi’s 2019 Rio Sordo Barbaresco is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of the appellation’s most admired crus. Sourced from the Rio Sordo vineyard in Barbaresco, this wine marries traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly elegant, terroir-driven style. It’s a bottle that will appeal both to collectors of Piedmontese reds and to anyone looking to explore Barbaresco at a very serious level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Montaribaldi Rio Sordo Barbaresco shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange highlights at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose opens with precise, lifted aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, layered with rose petals, dried violets, sweet spices, and hints of licorice, cedar and underbrush.
On the palate, this Barbaresco is medium-bodied but intense, with finely etched tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that drives the wine forward. Flavors of red cherry, cranberry and blood orange are intertwined with notes of tobacco, leather, dried herbs and a subtle truffle earthiness, reflecting its Rio Sordo origin. The structure is firm yet refined, promising excellent development; while already enjoyable with food after a bit of aeration, this vintage has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years from release, gaining complexity and softer tannins over time.
Production
The Rio Sordo vineyard lies on the rolling hills of Barbaresco in the Langhe, characterized by calcareous marl soils with good drainage and a south to southwest exposure that provides Nebbiolo with optimal sunlight and slow, even ripening. Montaribaldi typically harvests Nebbiolo for Barbaresco by hand in small crates to protect the fruit, selecting only the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged in oak – often a combination of large casks and/or older barrels – for a traditional Barbaresco élevage, followed by bottle aging to allow the elements to integrate before release.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes that match its structure and aromatic complexity. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, lamb shanks, truffle risotto, mushroom tagliatelle, game birds, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); if the wine is stored at cellar temperature, a brief decant of 60–90 minutes will help soften the tannins and open the bouquet. For bottles with a few more years of age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant is usually enough to let the wine fully express its nuances.
