Description

The 2020 Michele Chiarlo Cerequio Barolo is a refined, single-cru expression from one of Barolo’s most storied vineyards in La Morra. Crafted by Stefano Chiarlo, it captures the balance and elegance of a vintage marked by a mild winter, a bright, dry spring, well-timed summer rains and a perfectly dry, temperate September. With roots back to its first bottling in 1988, Cerequio has long been considered one of Barolo’s grand crus, and this 2020 release stands firmly in that tradition of depth, finesse and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous ruby core shading toward garnet at the rim, a classic Barolo hue that hints at both energy and development to come. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe red cherry and plum meet mentholated notes of mint and eucalyptus, alongside gentian, dried rose petals and finely etched spice. There’s a sense of precision to the aromatics, with each element clearly defined yet seamlessly integrated. On the palate, the 2020 Cerequio Barolo is structured yet supremely refined, with a silken, elongated tannin profile that frames rather than overwhelms the fruit. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry and blood orange are interwoven with hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, sweet spices and a subtle balsamic edge. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving lift and tension, while the tannins are firm but very fine-grained, promising excellent evolution in bottle. Although already approachable with proper aeration, this wine is built to age gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gaining in complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Cerequio is one of La Morra’s most prized crus, a perfectly exposed south–southwest-facing amphitheater at around 320 meters above sea level. The 3-hectare plot, planted between 1972 and 1990, sits on calcareous marl of ancient marine origin (Tortonian, roughly 9 million years old), with poor, basic soils rich in microelements such as magnesium and especially manganese—ideal conditions for Nebbiolo to express fragrance, finesse and minerality. Vines are trained Guyot at a density of about 4,500 vines per hectare, and the grapes for this 2020 were harvested manually between 10 and 13 October, at optimal ripeness. Vinification took place in 55 hl oak vats with around 20 days of maceration on the skins, using a gentle shower system to keep the cap moist and ensure delicate extraction at 27–30°C. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel, followed by a minimum of three years’ total maturation, including two years in medium-sized oak casks and subsequent refinement in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes and refined Piedmontese classics. It shines alongside grilled or roasted red meats, game birds, slow-braised beef or veal, and is superb with fresh egg tagliolini dressed in butter and shaved truffle. Mature hard cheeses and well-aged alpine styles also find a worthy match in its structure and aromatics. Serve at around 18°C, ideally after decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften. Older bottles will require gentler handling and a shorter decant, just enough to remove any sediment and open the bouquet.

Producer
Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont’s benchmark family estates, founded in 1956 and long recognized for its meticulous work across key appellations such as Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera d’Asti. Over the decades, the Chiarlo family has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of single-vineyard sites, with Cerequio emerging as a flagship cru in their portfolio since the first vintage in 1988. The estate has a strong focus on sustainable, vineyard-driven winemaking, emphasizing careful site selection, low yields and traditional yet precise cellar practices. Today, Michele and his son Stefano continue to craft wines that are seen as reference points for the region—elegant, terroir-transparent expressions that consistently earn critical acclaim and a loyal following among serious collectors.
