Description
2020 Mazzei Toscana Concerto di Fonterutoli is a bold, contemporary expression of Tuscany that marries native Sangiovese with noble Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from a cool, high-altitude vineyard at 350 metres, encircled on three sides by dense woodland, it delivers both power and poise in the glass. Celebrated by international critics with unanimous high scores, Concerto di Fonterutoli has become a modern Tuscan reference point for richly structured yet impeccably balanced red wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is deep ruby with youthful violet reflections, signalling concentration and freshness. The nose opens with ripe black cherries and dark plums, layered with blackberry compote, cardamom spice, and a savoury streak of grilled rosemary and forest undergrowth that clearly reflects its woodland-influenced terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and fleshy, with a core of black fruit—blackberry, black cherry, and plum—wrapped in notes of dark chocolate, roasted hazelnut, and subtle sweet spice. The tannins are firm and present yet finely grained, offering structure without overshadowing the purity of fruit or food on the plate. A vibrant line of acidity keeps everything taut and mouthwatering, leading to a long, layered finish. This 2020 has the balance and backbone to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and polish with proper cellaring.
Production
The fruit for Concerto di Fonterutoli comes from a particularly cool, high-lying site in Tuscany at around 350 metres above sea level, surrounded on three sides by thick forest. This unique setting moderates temperatures during the increasingly warm Tuscan summers, preserving acidity and aromatic detail in the grapes. The blend is 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. After careful sorting, the grapes are vinified separately, typically in temperature-controlled tanks to capture varietal purity and structure, before being aged in quality oak (often French barriques and tonneaux) to integrate tannins and add subtle layers of spice, toast and complexity. The final blend is crafted to showcase both the authentic Tuscan character of Sangiovese and the depth and power contributed by Cabernet.
Food & Serving
Concerto di Fonterutoli is a natural partner for robust, flavourful dishes, particularly grilled and roasted meats. It shines alongside a classic Tuscan T-bone bistecca alla Fiorentina, lamb chops with rosemary, grilled beef ribeye, game dishes, or slow-braised short ribs. It also complements rich pasta with ragù, wild mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the dark fruit and spice aromatics to fully unfurl.
Producer
The Mazzei family is one of Tuscany’s most historic and respected wine dynasties, with roots in the region dating back to the 15th century. From their Fonterutoli estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, they have played a key role in elevating Tuscan wine quality and reputation, pioneering refined Sangiovese expressions and innovative blends. Concerto di Fonterutoli, first produced in the 1980s, was among the early "Super Tuscan" style wines that helped redefine what Tuscan reds could be, combining local tradition with international know-how. Over the decades, Mazzei has earned critical acclaim worldwide for its meticulous vineyard work, terroir-driven philosophy, and consistently high-quality wines that capture both the heritage and modern energy of Tuscany.
