Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Masseto shows a deep, opaque ruby core with vivid purple highlights, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and refined, opening with ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, then unfolding into notes of violet, cocoa, espresso, graphite, tobacco and a delicate hint of Mediterranean herbs and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with a velvety, almost creamy mouthfeel supported by firm yet ultra-fine tannins. Dark fruit dominates initially—black cherry, blueberry and plum—followed by nuances of dark chocolate, licorice, cedar, sweet spice and a subtle mineral edge that reflects its coastal terroir. The balance between power and freshness is a hallmark of Masseto; the vibrant acidity keeps the generous fruit in check and stretches the finish out impressively long. Production
Masseto is born from a single, gently sloping vineyard on the Bolgheri coast of Tuscany, planted on a rare combination of blue clay, sand and gravel that gives the wine its remarkable depth and structure. The maritime climate, with warm days, cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and significant diurnal shifts, allows Merlot to ripen fully while preserving freshness and aromatic detail. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in small lots, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Fermentation typically takes place in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks, with careful temperature control and long macerations to extract color, tannin and flavor without harshness. The wine is then aged in 100% French oak barriques—many of them new—for around 18–24 months, followed by additional bottle aging to harmonize the components before release. The magnum format further enhances slow, graceful evolution over time.

The 2020 Masseto Magnum is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised lamb shank, venison, or veal with truffle jus. It also shines alongside dishes with earthy elements such as porcini mushrooms, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—60 to 120 minutes for current drinking—to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its complexity; in 10–15 years, a shorter decant will usually suffice just to remove any sediment and awaken the bouquet.
