Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Masseto is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant, almost inky core and a narrow purple rim that speaks to its youth and intensity. The nose is immediately seductive and layered: ripe red and black fruit – plum, blackberry and black cherry – are wrapped in notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, graphite, crushed slate, dried herbs and a hint of warm spice. There is a sensual, polished oak character, but it is beautifully integrated into the fruit rather than dominating it. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a seamless, velvety texture that glides across the mouth. Silky but firm tannins frame waves of dark plum, blackberry compote and redcurrant, gradually giving way to cocoa, espresso, leather, fine cedar and a subtle savory edge from the Cabernet Franc. The concentration is impressive, yet the wine never feels heavy; acidity is fresh and lifted, keeping everything in perfect balance and extending the finish into a long, elegant echo of fruit, spice and mineral notes. Already inviting and drinkable, 2020 Masseto has the structure and depth to evolve beautifully for 15–20+ years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with careful cellaring.

Production
Masseto 2020 comes from the famed Masseto hill in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, where maritime breezes and warm days are balanced by cool nights. The vineyard is defined by its unique blue clay soils mixed with sand and gravel – a rare terroir in Tuscany that gives Merlot (and now a portion of Cabernet Franc) both richness and tension. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in small parcels, with multiple passes through the vines to ensure optimal ripeness and selection of only the best clusters. In the cellar, each block is vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by fermentation and maceration tailored to extract fine, polished tannins rather than aggression. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for around two years, with blending decisions made only after élevage to achieve the precise balance of concentration, aromatic complexity and elegance that defines Masseto. A further period of bottle aging precedes release, allowing the components to harmonize before the wine reaches the market.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic wine best enjoyed with refined yet flavorful dishes: think roasted lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, bistecca alla fiorentina, veal in truffle jus, or game birds with mushroom and red wine reduction. It also shines alongside rich pasta dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to let the aromatics unfurl. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered complexity; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to separate them from any sediment.

Masseto is produced by Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, one of the leading estates of Bolgheri and a cornerstone of the Super Tuscan movement. Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia quickly rose to international prominence with its Bordeaux-inspired blends from the Tuscan coast. The single vineyard Masseto project – now recognized as a separate, world-class estate in its own right – was born from the realization that the blue clay soils of this particular hill were uniquely suited to Merlot, yielding a wine of remarkable depth, finesse and longevity. Today, under the ownership of the Frescobaldi family, Masseto is one of Italy’s most coveted and collectible wines, traded alongside the great names of Bordeaux and Napa, and consistently earning top scores from major wine critics and publications.
