Description

2020 Lynsolence Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a powerful, single-varietal Merlot crafted from old vines on a tiny 2.5-hectare estate in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. This is a modern, intensely concentrated right-bank Bordeaux, raised entirely in new French oak and already hailed by critics, including a 96/100 score from Vinous, as a standout in the vintage. Combining glossy fruit richness with classic Saint-Émilion structure, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential. Its key distinction lies in the combination of very old Merlot vines (45–50 years on average) and a meticulous, small-lot vinification in wood, giving the wine remarkable depth and refinement. The unique terroir—very gravelly sandy soils over an iron-rich clay subsoil—contributes to its tension, minerality, and layered complexity. Produced by Vignobles Denis Barraud, Lynsolence has quickly carved out a reputation as one of the appellation’s most compelling “garage-style” Grand Crus, emblematic of the new wave of artisanal, ultra-quality-focused Saint-Émilion estates.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lynsolence Saint-Émilion Grand Cru shows a deep, opaque purple core with vivid violet hues at the rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The color clings to the glass, hinting at the wine’s richness and extract. The nose is intense and seductive, opening with ripe blackberries, crushed black cherries, and juicy black plums. These dark fruit notes are layered with nuances of cedarwood, lilac, licorice, and a subtle dusting of earthy, dried soil tones. As the wine aerates, more detail emerges: hints of cocoa, sweet spice from new oak, and a faint mineral edge that keeps the aromas fresh rather than heavy. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, polished, and tightly focused, with an abundance of concentrated black fruit at its core. The texture is structured yet refined, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins that feel chalky rather than rustic. There is a vibrant line of acidity that provides lift and energy, balancing the ripe fruit and new oak, and leading into a long, layered finish where dark berries, licorice, and cedar slowly fan out. The overall impression is one of power held in check by precision and freshness. Aging potential is excellent: while it can be enjoyed in its youth with a good decant, the 2020 Lynsolence is built for the cellar. Expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor while the tannins integrate and the fruit becomes more complex and savory.

Production
Lynsolence is sourced from a compact 2.5-hectare plot in the commune of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, at the lieu-dit “Le Bert” in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. Here, the vines—100% Merlot with an average age of 45–50 years—are rooted in very gravelly sandy soils resting on a subsoil of iron-rich clay. This combination delivers both ripeness and refinement: the gravel and sand promote excellent drainage and aromatic purity, while the iron-bearing clay adds density, structure, and a subtle, ferrous mineral note. Harvesting is carried out manually, allowing strict selection of only the healthiest, perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, the must undergoes a cold pre-fermentation maceration for 8–10 days at around 6°C to gently extract color and aromatic compounds before fermentation begins. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats and 400-liter barriques, followed by an extended cuvaison of more than 30 days to build depth and texture. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in new French oak barrels, and the wine is then aged for 18 months on its fine lees in 100% new French oak barriques from the prestigious Tronçais forest. This rigorous, small-scale, wood-focused vinification results in a richly structured, polished Grand Cru with impressive concentration and complexity.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Lynsolence Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a superb match for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its depth and tannic structure. Think grilled or roasted red meats such as ribeye steak, entrecôte, or lamb chops, as well as game dishes like venison, wild boar, or duck breast with dark fruit reductions. It also pairs beautifully with hearty, slow-cooked recipes—braised beef, short ribs, or lamb shanks—and with a selection of mature, hard or semi-hard cheeses such as aged Comté, Manchego, or well-aged cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (about 61–64°F). In its youth, this wine benefits greatly from decanting: allow at least 1–2 hours in a carafe to let the aromatics blossom and the tannins soften. For bottles with some age, a gentle decant shortly before serving is still recommended to separate any sediment and preserve the wine’s more delicate, evolved bouquet.

Producer
Lynsolence is produced by Vignobles Denis Barraud, a family-run estate that has become a reference point for concentrated, high-precision Merlot from the right bank of Bordeaux. While not among the largest or oldest châteaux of Saint-Émilion, the domaine has distinguished itself through its meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and a deliberately artisanal approach to winemaking. Located in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, Vignobles Denis Barraud focuses on expressing the full potential of its small, old-vine holdings, particularly through Lynsolence, its flagship cuvée. Over the years, Lynsolence has attracted increasing critical acclaim and loyal followers among collectors who appreciate powerful yet finely crafted Saint-Émilion. The estate’s commitment to manual harvesting, rigorous selection, and élevage in top-quality new French oak has positioned it among the noteworthy modern-style producers of the region, showcasing how small Grand Cru properties can compete at a very high level on the international stage.
