Description

The 2020 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most legendary vineyards on earth. Sourced from the hallowed slopes of Montrachet, this Chardonnay captures the rare combination of power, precision and silken texture that has made the cru almost mythical among collectors. Produced in minute quantities, it is a singular expression of Grand Cru terroir in an outstanding vintage and has earned exceptional critical acclaim, including 98 points from James Suckling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru shows a clear, bright, pale to medium lemon-gold hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately intense and layered, with aromas of blanched almond, marzipan, vanilla pod and lightly toasted oak unfolding over floral notes of honeysuckle and acacia. Subtler undertones of citrus oil, ripe stone fruit and a touch of warm pastry add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a mouth-filling, almost creamy texture supported by a vibrant core of freshness. Flavors echo the nose: almond cream, vanilla and marzipan are wrapped around juicy citrus and ripe white peach, with a saline mineral thread that runs through the mid-palate into a very long, refined finish. The structure, depth and integrated oak suggest excellent aging potential; while already impressive, this 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru will reward 10–20 years in a good cellar, gaining even more complexity and tertiary nuance over time.

Production
Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most exalted Grand Cru vineyards, straddling the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet on the mid-slope of the Côte de Beaune. Here, Chardonnay thrives on a mix of thin, well-drained limestone and marl soils with excellent exposure, typically south to southeast, maximizing sunlight while maintaining freshness. Yields are kept very low to concentrate flavor and structure, and harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar, Louis Latour vinifies this Grand Cru with great care: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels (a significant proportion new), and extended maturation on fine lees help to build texture, depth and aromatic complexity, while regular bâtonnage (as appropriate for the vintage) integrates oak and preserves the wine’s richness without sacrificing its minerality.

Food & Serving
This Montrachet Grand Cru is a gastronomic wine made for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with luxurious dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a Champagne or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre noisette, Bresse chicken with morels and cream, or veal in a light truffle cream. Aged Comté or well-matured Gruyère also make superb partners. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine unfold and soften the oak, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only briefly, if at all, to preserve delicate aromas.

Producer
Maison Louis Latour is one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected houses, with roots stretching back to the late 18th century and a reputation built on both grand vineyard holdings and meticulous craftsmanship. Based in Beaune, the family-owned domaine has long been a key reference for white wines from the Côte de Beaune, particularly in Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites. Their commitment to careful vineyard management, traditional yet precise winemaking, and long-term investment in great terroirs has cemented Louis Latour’s status as a benchmark producer in the region. The house’s bottlings from Corton-Charlemagne and Montrachet, in particular, are regarded as some of the finest and most age-worthy expressions of Chardonnay in the world.
